Using the Restore function for your device is part of standard troubleshooting procedure. Restoring your device will delete all the data from your device, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. All settings are restored to their factory condition.
Whenever you restore your device, Apple highly recommends that you perform a sync prior to restoring to back up any changes since your last sync. If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Use the following steps to restore your device:
    1. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and running before attempting to update.
    2. Connect your device to your computer.
    3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
    4. Select the Summary tab.
    5. Select the Restore option.
    6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up option (as seen in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not necessary to create another.
      ht1414_03--back_up_settings-002-en.jpg
    7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up your device, you should not have to worry about restoring your phone).
      ht1414_04--restore_dialog-002-en.jpg
    8. Once the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple logo while starting up:
      ht1414_05--restored-002-en.jpg
iPhone only: For the iPhone only, after a restore, the iPhone displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. Keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or you see "iPhone is activated." If iTunes does not have an Internet connection, you cannot complete this step.
      ht1414_06--connect-002-en.png ht1414_07--activated-002-en.png
    9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup. Once your device is restored and-in the case of the iPhone-in the process of activating, you should be able to see the following in iTunes:
      ht1414_08--set_up-003-en.png
Select the backup you want for your device and select the Continue button to complete your device's restoration.
If you do not want to restore from backup, select "Set up as new..." If you want to preserve previous backups that iTunes has made, be sure to back up the appropriate directory before choosing to set up as new.

What do i do after locking my iphone with too many passcode attempts

If you have forgotten your iPhone’s Passcode you will need to restore your phone via iTunes.

    1. First you have to put your phone into the restore mode which is a slightly fiddly process.
    2. Plug your iPhone into your PC or Mac with the USB cable
    3. Press and hold the power button at the top and then slide to power off the iPhone
    4. Press the power button to power the iPhone on and keep it held while simultaneously pressing the home button
    5. After a few seconds a yellow alert triangle will appear and the iPhone will say it is iPhone Restore Mode.
    6. Open up iTunes and click on the Summary tab
    7. Click on Restore to restore your iPhone. This will reset all your iPhone’s setting to the factory defaults, including the Passcode.

You should then follow these steps below to activate the passcode again.
    1. Click the Home button to bring up the main menu
    2. Click on Settings
    3. In the Settings screen click on General
    4. In the General screen click on Passcode Lock
    5. This will open the Set Passcode screen. Enter a memorable 4-figure code and re-enter it when prompted
    6. You will now be at the Passcode Lock screen. You can change when you are prompted to enter the Passcode. The default setting – Immediately – means you will be asked to enter it as soon as your start using the iPhone. But you can change the setting so that the prompt appears after a certain period of use
    7. Press the Home button to return to the main menu.

I want to know the code for Restore Factory settings for my 3G iPhone

You can either go to settings -> general -> scroll to the bottom "set to default"
Here you can choose what to reset.

OR you can restore the firmware of the device (this will erase all data on it, music, videos, pictures, bookmarks, wifi-keys...)

To set your iPhone 3G back to factory settings, just connect it to itunes and wait for the device to appear. Click on the iphone and you should see the screen that tells you how much more space you have left etc.
In the middle of that screen you have the options to "search for updates" and for "restore" .
Click on restore and wait. (If you have never restored or updated your iPhone, itunes will download the most recent firmware from the internet, this may take a couple of minutes)

Once its done, the iphone will restart and reconnect to itunes.
Itunes will ask you if you want to restore (if you have any backups) or treat it as a new phone.

Select treat as a new phone and give it a new name. Now everything is back to factory settings and all media, settings and accounts are deleted.
