Unfortunately, DVD drives do not operate like a giant floppy/zip disk. You can write data to drive in multiple sessions, but you have you using a CD burning program to do so.

If you are trying to use your DVD as a back-up device, I suggest you reconsider and get yourself a cheap USB HDD for backup purposes.

Alternatively, there are free online backups being offered by Google and Microsoft.

My writer when i put a blank dvd it shows used space 0 and free space 0.......... it writes the dvd but while data verification it shows read error.... please guide me what to do..

Typically it means it needs to be cleaned. Get one of the CD/DVD laser lens cleaner disks with optical quality brushes on the bottom side of the disk. Diskwasher, Belkin and several other companies make them.

Will not operate at all. i replaced the LG super multi, because i thought it was faulty, however the new one still doesnt read Cd's or DVD's.

if you have replaced it by a new one and you are confirmed that it is ok, then first check data cables and also update his firmware by latest one available on owner's website.
try it.
