Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have a 50 inch samsung dlp tv. I think its my light engine which includes the DMD board. What is the part that goes bad in the part of the light engine that is attatched to the DMD board? It looks like just the lens and the housing, possibly some connecting points. If it is just the board, that would be half the price of the entire light engine unless it is prone to going bad as well?

The issue I'm having is the picture is fine for about 10 minutes, then goes dark with sound then lamp goes out fans still running. This has gotten progressively worse over the past few months. The lamp has 13,000 hours on it and is way past due for replacing. I had Sears come out and he said it was the color wheel because he could hear it buzzing, I hadn't heard it so it wasn't so bad. I replaced that but the same condition was there. It doesn't matter which imput I use so those boards are likely ok, cw is new so should be ok, I have heard the DMD board was bad then the light engine was bad. So what I was trying to figure out if it is the optical module, DMD or housing causing the problem. I can get a DMD board for $159.00 or the three parts you show in the picture for $329.00 including another new cw. If I know its not the optical module or the housing I would like to avoid getting the entire LE and avoid the additional cw and other parts I don't need. How can i check to see that those parts are ok or are not the likely cause. Or would it be best to just get the LE to be covered. Thanks.

    OK, HLN507W

I have its service manual copy, let me know your email address to send you trouble shooting pdf file, that will help you to check/ test recommended signal/ volts on specific locations/ connectors to narrow down problem.

  • jrader Jul 08, 2010

That would be awsome. I already don't feel so cheated by Sears anymore. Still boycoting them for not being willing to come out again to get the diagonisis correct without charging again. You can send PDF to jrader@pressleyridge.org.

While this will be helpful, most is likely over my head. Don't have a volt meeter but could get one. Then not real sure I could find all the correct pins to check. I'm ok with going with the best guess at the most likely to fail part if need be since the parts I have located are fairly reasonable all things considered. The digidial and analog boards for example were only about $60.00 so if I replaced the light engine and boards, bulb and cw it would be less than what Sears wanted for just replacing the color wheel. I just dont want to replace all that and it be a $5.00 switch or something I didn't consider. I'm assuming a lamp going bad couldn't cause all this. Last time I turned it on was the first time I had any flashing lights in the front top two green bottom one red then out. I've heard that the light tunnel which I guess is the housing moduel goes bad and causes problems. I don't have the green or white pixels or any bands going across the screen. Just clear picture then dark.

I would recommend to replace/ swap lamp just to make sure that lamp is not cause of problem.

Swap lamp means put this lamp in another working tv and that tv lamp in this your tv for cross check.

  • jrader Jul 08, 2010

I'll replace the lamp since it needs to be replaced anyway and I don't have one I can swap with. I'm reasonaly confident that I can get this set going again cheaper or close to a replacement set. I'm looking at a cost close to what most have paid in lamps in the same amount of time. If not, it won't be my 1st money pit. With enought silicone I still haven't ruled out the big fish tank idea as a last resort. Thanks for the near real time suggestions. I'll check back in after the lamp replacement.

OK, if lamp has not been replaced so far than I think lamp is most probably cause of darker image after 10-15 minutes tv operation.

Take out existing lamp from tv and test it in another tv in local tv repair shop, if they have similar tv.

Let me know if you need further helpful info.

    Thanks.

New lamp resulted in same condition. Picture looks great for about two minutes now and then looses picture, sound still present. Light from lamp is still visible in the back of the TV. The light has a fluttering effect which I'm guessing is the color wheel turning or could be a fan. Difficult to see if its the CW but since it was just replaced I'm figuring I didn't get a bad one that produces the same problem. Is this then likely to be the DMD module? Could if be one of the other modules on the light engine. I have read that on optical module its more of a band of color that can be distorted but not has been happening to my image. Should I just replace the entire light engine. Its only $229.00 without the CW and if that is likely to fix the problem I'd be ok with that. Could it be any other obscure part causing the picture to go dark? TV is till on and if I don't wait to long it will let me use the controler to shut it off so I don't think its in the switches or the ballast but I'm just a parts replacer at this point.

I think light engine should be tasted in any other similar tv to confirm that it is causing problem.
You can test its boards as well by swapping with other similar tv. Below image shows internal parts of light engine, light comes from lamp, color wheel add colors in that light and dmd reflect that light with image details through lenses to project it on front screen. That is whole function of light engine in simple words.

  • jrader Jul 12, 2010

Simple words work for me. I'll check around some of the repair shops to see if anyone will test the light engine. Do you have any step by step instructions on taking it out. I'm sure I can figure it out but if there is a step by step I follow directions well. Most of the time anyway.

SCREEN FREEZES ON MY SAMSUNG DLP

Hi,Yes your problem sounds like the DMD board. This is how it works: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/dlp1.htm Basically the light of the lamp goes through a tunnel that carries a color wheel(rotating disc with a gamma of colors that creates the colors on your tv)then the light of the lamp goes through the DMD board which is a chip composed of around 2 million pixels that creates the images and colors. When it starts to fail it will create black bars, pixelation, picture will freeze, color distortion or white dots on screens.I couldn't find the Dmd by itself but found it with the complete light engine http://www.discount-merchant.com/SAMSUNG-BP41-00119E-p/1171034.htm?Click=48173 Here's a video that will help you find where the DMd chip is located : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jr_9A5Xd2Q Have a blessed one!

Samsung rear projection tries three time then goes

There are several things in this set that will cause this. I have ran into this problem 40-50 times on that specific unit. Most common problem is the lamp. Next most common problem is the DMD board which is a very expensive repair. Next most common cause is the ballast which powers the lamp. Next is the color wheel but usually that gets noisey before it fails. These DLP televisions aren't easy to diagnose but they're easy to work on. Now here's the thing, all four of these problems can be solved by replacing the light engine. If you are willing to put some money into it, the engine assembly is real easy to change. Just google the exact and complete model number and search prices of the light engine. I'm pretty sure the part number is BP96-00305J. Sometimes you can actually ship the engine from your tv in to be rebuilt. This can save you money. Any repair on this tv will probably cost 200-500 but they get a great picture. I have a samsung DLP in my livingroom. Good luck, Russmann.

Samsung DLP model#HLP4663w.green hue on the screen, what is the solution to my problem.

Hi,It sounds like it could be the color wheel or DMD.The color wheel is a rotating disc that has a gamma of colors it spins at high rpms. The light of the lamp goes through it to create the colors on your tv.When it starts to go bad you will get color distortion ,black and white picture and sometimes you will hear humming noises. The DMD is another possibility. When it starts to fail it will create black bars, pixelation, color distortion or white dots on screens. Here's a video that will help you find where the DMd chip is located : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jr_9A5Xd2Q One simple test is to display menu and if it's affected then most like will be an issue w the DMD board.Found the complete set with color wheel and DMD included here: http://www.discount-merchant.com/SAMSUNG-30407272050-Light-Engine-w-Color-Wheel-p/1139314.htm Have a blessed one!

I have a samsung 50 in. DLP PBO2. I have black specs all over the screen and a few white one. Whats wrong?

This is a failure of the DMD board. The DMD board is the device that has the "million little mirrors" that compose each pixel of your display. The black specs are mirrors that are stuck in the off posistion therefore not reflecting any light at all. The white specs are the opposite reflecting light all of the time. This is a repair you should leave to a TV technician as once this board is repalced there is some electrical and mechanical alignment needed. Please take a moment to rate my answer. Thanks...

I have a 56" DLP Samsung (HLR5668W) Right side goes solid black

The color wheels will never fix an issue like that. The only things that will cause that issue is a bad DMD board which is part of the light engine or the digital board which is not. Freak Squad need to replace the digital board.

Samsung DLP HL-S4266W White dot problem

Its the DLP IC chip itself that is bad. The DMD board is where the chip resides but if you order a board, it will come without the chip. Its not cheap and the replacement is tricky because the DMD board must be removed and then an alignment of picture centering will be necessary.
