Question about Philips 42FD9932 42 in. Plasma Television

42FD9932/01S Hello everyone, I see lots of you guys are expert with this plasma so maybe I could get a help for my problem. I've got the plasma philips 42FD9932/01s which has suddenly decided not to work anymore. If i try to switch it on i can see just a quick screen coming and then it would just shut off and start red led blinking. I've opened it. Seems like one fan doesn't turn quickly as the others, sometimes I have to help it to start. If I help it to start it seems like the time before the unit shuts off is slightly bigger but anyway it shuts off after 1 / 2 secs max. I see the voltage on all the fans is 5V although they are 12v fans. Any suggestion? Is it normal? Thank anyone for any kind of help. Fred

    Thank you Jerryg50,

I have download a service manual yesterday. Even though it's not exactly this model of TV I see it's pretty similar. As you say and as the manual reports, the fault can be anything. Different outputs can interrupt the source and bring the microprocessor to "fault status". I might say I've got two failures here: one is the fan which is not turning (i see the difference when i help it to start) and then another one. I would try to locate the problem if I had the right schematics. I'll try to find something into the net. I'll let you know. The fan voltage , btw, is 5v on purpose.

Thank you very much for the help.

This can be the power supply, or one of the boards is pulling too much current and thus over-loading the power supply. There are many types of faults that can do this type of failure.

The service rep would use the process of making some tests as per the service manual, and then if necessary use the process of board swaping to find the failed board.

I am sure that if the set is still supported, the service proper manual can be purchased from Philips. There will be a charge for it. In the past, I have bought service manuals from them when I was doing TV service. I have paid in the area of about $40 to $150 for a service manual depending on the make and model. You will need Philips as your parts source once you found the fault. The exception will be if the part you need is generic and can be bought from a general electronics parts supplier. Even then you have to be careful, because there are many parts that are what we call "select on test" and must meet very tight specificatons.

As for the fault, the best you can do is check the power drive device that runs the fan that is not turning. If it is an IC, then it will not be easy to test. You can check to see if there is proper drive voltage or drive pulses, depening on the design, and see if they are present at the device that is driving the fan. You can also see if there are supply volts to the drive IC. If the fan kick-starts and stops, then the fault is probably somewhere else and the part of the supply is being shut down for another reason. To see drive pulses and rapid changing control voltages a scope is essential.

I would also say to check the power supply outputs, but the problem is that when the uPC sees a fault, it will shut down parts of the power supply to protect the system as best possible. This is where board substitution comes in to know the board that the fault is on.

As for servicing, component level on the boards is not strongly supported. In the service shop they will only change obvious parts such as a standard capacitor or semiconductor.

When changing any part, the cause of the failure is very important to locate. If it is not determined, there is a strong possibility that the same failure will occure again!

I found with many of the Plasma and LCD display manufactures they not always not show component level on all of the boards in their service manuals. When I was servicing these sets, we were mainly changing boards.

These boards are very complex and use SMD technology. The time and diagnostics involved to actualy troubleshoot these boards at the component level would never be feasible in a service shop, and especialy for consumer products. Also, the cost for the proper surface soldering equipment and diagnostics equipment for a service shop would not be feasible for consumer service, unless they were servicing high end industrial circuit boards and the return was worth the investment.

JVC PD35D30 Plasma won't turn on anymore...

Yeah, I was going to suggest power supply issue. Plasmas IMHO, are not worth spending the money to fix. Its the reason why they are so cheap these days in comparison to LCD's. I had a 50" Samsung Plasma that went out on me within 2 years (E Buffer board and XMain problem). Its not about the manufacturer but more about the Plasma technology. Do a few searches about plasma and you will find a lot of problems with these tv's. Id say cut your losses, sell the TV for parts and buy a more reliable technology

Black line from top to bottom on left side of screen one inch wid

This is fairly common. If you don't perform a fix soon, you'll end up with burn lines. Follow this link. Pay particular attention to the soldering part, not the dismantling. A lot of plasmas from the last few years used a LG board made in Korea. The TV in question in this forum is a Hyundai, which is, yep you guessed it, KOREAN. So the pictures of the ribbons are accurate. Don't let someone try to sell you a fix. This sight is supposed to be everyone helping everyone else out. SHAME ON YOU DAVE FOR SELLING HERE!
