Question about Amana Refrigerators

1 Answer

I just have a question. Where on the dial should the "chiller fresh position" be set? It is located on the inside back wall of the refrigerator. It is a semicircular dial with arrows at both ends.

You shouldn't have to mess with this. I think this sets the time delay between start up of the ice maker water pump and the chilled fresh water delivery and pre-chills the evaporator plate within the ice maker, which reduces the amount of expansion in the ice and makes it easier for the tray to deploy the ice once frozen. To far one way your ice will stick, to far the other way and the evaporator hose might freeze up. So split the difference if you think you need to change it and then move a little above center if you think the ice is sticking or overflowing the trays.

Sorry, I didn't like the way I worded that, it sounds like a manual. This is a better explanation...

I think one arrow starts the water pump moving water into the ice tray and the other controls the delivery of new fresh water into a reservoir which is allowed to sit and cool first. The distance between the arrows is the time the water is allowed to sit and should therefore be opposite one another so the water can get as cold as possible. But I think you can adjust it slightly if you think the water is starting to freeze before it's pumped into the tray to stop it from putting strain on the pump.

    Jack,
thank you for your response. I do not have an ice-maker or water-maker in this refrigerator. The original setting was to the far left of the dial just above arrow. The Amana refrigerator also has a separate fresh food and a separate deep freeze setting which are in a different location from the "chiller fresh position". I could supply the model no. and serial no. if that would help. The semicircular dial has arrows at both ends which point downwards. Should we just leave the setting at its original setting? Thank you.

The make model would probably help then, it sound like it may not do what I thought it did from the description of the part...regardless, it's good advice to leave it alone; usually you won't have to change the settings on the unit unless you notice a problem with the temperature.

    Jack,
    The model no. is TH21S3W.
    The serial no. is 9502146950.
    Thanks for your help.

    Jack,
I'm not sure whether you received my message with the model no. and serial no.? If not, I can re-send. Please respond at your convenience. There is no urgency. I am a little confused by the FixYa system.
    Thank you.

The documentation says that the chiller fresh system is a drawer inside a sleeve that circulates cold air to keep food fresh longer. It says by default to slide the control to cold, located in the middle. (where it sounds like it is now) It says to adjust the setting to the coldest temperature if food is not cooling...probably when more full or if opened regularly. But that too high will freeze food or cause ice crystals.

    Short answer, don't change it.

How frequently should the compressor run on a fridge?

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

The model number provided does not register. Your model number is located on the inside wall of your fresh food section.

Your freezer is your only source of cooling. It will meet its setting before meeting the refrigerator temperature.

The normal setting are -2 to +2 degrees F. for the freezer and 35 -40 degrees F. for your fresh food section.

Your freezer will go about 10 degrees F. above the set temperature. Then when it reaches 10 degrees F. below the set temperature the compressor will kick in.

You have condensing coils either under your unit or a canister in the back which gets ride of the heat. When the condensing coil is plugged up with dust, this could affect your cooling by as much as 40 degrees.

I do not think this is your total problem.

Feel the face of your separator wall between your freezer and fresh food section. Is it hot?

Your problem is your condenser fan in the lower right back of you unit is burned out.

So, you can not dissipate the heat.

Remove the lower back cover. Take a common household fan to blow air under your unit.

Your compressor is running to make up for the heat that the condenser fan can not dissipate.

Not cooling properly

Hello,

First thing- set the controls at the mid range of their settings. Next, check the coils under the fridge to see if they are clogged with dust, etc. Next, using a couple stem thermometers, determine the temps in the freezer and fresh food sections. In the fresh food section, place a tall glass of water on a shelf in the middle, put the thermometer in and let it set for awhile in the fridge. Inside the fresh food section, look for the damper opening at the top of the wall in between the two sections. Wet the back of your fingers- can you feel air blowing through the damper opening? Inside the freezer section, look at the back wall- any frost buildup there.

Hope this help.....

My two year old refrigerator is now at 60F although the freezer is working fine. What could the problem be?

There is a fan the moves air over the coils that remove the heat from the refrigerator. That air has to be distributed between the freezer and the fresh foods section. To accomplish that, a fresh foods temp dial is located inside that section and lets in either more air or less. Make sure that it is set correctly. Make sure nothing blocks the opening that the air is expelled from. That air flow is important to that sections temperature maintenance.

Refrigerator leaking water

This sounds like the water line from the icemaker and the cool water reservior inside the refridgerator side. The line is a rigid plastic hose and could be a leak at one point that is small enough to allow water to run along the line. Also sounds like you have a humidity problem. Check the door seals and wipe them off and apply a thin coat of die-electric grease to the seal. this will help keep it pliable and soft.
The water in the bottom leaks into a trough that is made into the fridge. This usaully evaporates, This is for the auto-defrost. It keeps the water from getting on the floor.
Check to see if the outer door gets hot at the edges. If not, It may not be auto-defrosting.
I would first check the water line first as this seems to be a more serious issue right now. The line is probably loose at one of the connections between the ice maker and water reservior.

Whirlpool american fridge

You have a problem in you automatic defrost system. It could be one of the following that is causing it. The defrost timer could be bad, Locate it and rotate the dial Clockwise SLOWLY until you hear one click. The refrigerator will be in the defrost cycle. Wait about 20-30 minutes and if it defrosts and does not restart rotate the dial a little more and it will start. This tells you that the defrost timer is bad. If it does not defrost and restarts after 18-22 minutes the heater or defrost thermostat is bad.

Frosty

IS THE BACK OF THE FREEZER CLEAR ICE OR WHITE FROST?
IF IT IS WHITE FROST, THERE IS A FAILURE OF THE DEFROST CYCLE. THREE COMPONENTS NEED TO BE CHECKED. THERE IS A DEFROST TIMER, HEATER AND BI-METAL. THE HEATER AND BI-METAL ARE LOCATED BEHIND THE BACK WALL OF THE FREEZER WHERE THE FROST IS BUILDING UP. IF IT IS A WHIRLPOOL, THE TIMER IS LOCATED IN THE FRESH FOOD COMPARTMENT WITH THE COLD CONTROL. LOOK FOR A HOLE THE SIZE OF A DIME IN THE CONTROL HOUSING. THERE IS A SMALL DIAL IN THERE THAT CAN BE ADVANCED WITH A SCREWDRIVER.
ADVANCE IT UNTIL YOU HEAR A STRONG CLICK AND THE
REFRIGERATOR SHUTS OFF. THAT WILL BE IN THE DEFROST CYCLE. WAIT ABOUT TEN MINUTES AND LISTEN FOR SIZZLING IN THE FREEZER COMPARTMENT. ALSO LOOK FOR A RED/ORANGE GLOW IN THE FREEZER. IF THAT HAPPENS, THE HEATER AND BI-METAL ARE O.K.
REPLACE THE TIMER. IF NOT, TAKE THE BACK PANEL OFF THE FREEZER AND CHECK THE HEATER AND BI-METAL WITH A VOLT-OHM METER. REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PART.
ON G.E. REFRIGERATORS, SOME HAVE THE TIMER LOCATED BEHIND THE TOE PLATE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE REFRIGERATOR. ON OTHER REFRIGERATORS, IT IS LOCATED INSIDE THE COMPRESSOR COMPARTMENT TUCKED BACK IN A CORNER.

Cooler wont cool below 48 degrees.

Keep a thermometer handy. (adjust temperature control knob accordingly)
Periodically monitor temperatures inside your cooler. (adjust as necessary)
Keep the refrigerator door closed as much as possible to avoid temperature fluctuations

The temperature of the refrigerator compartment is
controlled by adjusting/setting the thermostat control
knob, located on the ceiling of the refrigerator
cabinet.
To start the refrigerator, and achieve maximum
cooling quickly;
• Turn the temperature control knob (using a coin
or screwdriver) clockwise to the furthest
(maximum) setting on the darker blue section of
the graduated control dial.
• Allow the refrigerator to run at this setting for 3~4
hours.
• When maximum cooling is achieved, turn back
the temperature control knob setting to the 2:00
o'clock position on the graduated blue control
dial.
• Correct cooling temperature is a key factor to
consider in storing and dispensing draught beer.
• Optimum temperature for serving draught beer is
between 34ºF ~ 38ºF.(1ºC ~ 3ºC)
• To maintain temperatures ranging between
34ºF ~ 38ºF.(1ºC ~ 3ºC) We recommend the
thermostat knob be positioned at the "2:00
o'clock" setting on the graduated blue control dial.
• To turn off the refrigerator, (no cooling) rotate the
control knob to the "0" position.
