Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I am having Icemaker problems with my Maytag side by side model# MSD2754FRW. The icemaker is not running at all. I have defrosted the freezer for about 4 hours thinking that ice may have jammed it but it is still not working. What can be the cause? Btw....the freezer is very cold.

Good day. Firstly check for any fuses that might have blown. If it is not a fuse, it can only be a sensor switch inside the ice maker section. There is normally only two wires going into the switch. Use a multi meter and set it to Ohm and check for any reading. If there is no reading the switch is faulty and needs to be replaced. Another way to test is to remove the wires going into the switch and connect to one another and leave it for a while to see if freezing does occur. Hope this helps!

Unfortunately I am not sure on your model. Fuses will be located near the motor, if any.

Maytag side by side msd 2656, ice cubes melts & refreezes

NOTE: This
is a multi-solution answer since I don't have all the tech from your question to pinpoint your problem
But the solution is in here generically, if you read and study the solutions very, very carefully.
Check Temp inside freezer. It has to be down to about 10 or 15 degrees
This can cause slow ice making if its too high even tho its freezing everything else at 25 degrees
The ref. temp should be about 33-35
The Freezer temp should be 0 to 10 Any thing below these temps is overkill and a waste of elect
The higher the number you turn it up to is the coldest
The icemaker is 110v
See if water is in icemaker.
Pour water in Ice Maker and wait to see if it ejects.
If it ejects thenyou need to replace water valve in rear bottom of fridge(Its the part that
attaches to water line out of wall)
If it doesn't eject then it is a faulty Ice Maker.
If its leaking or no water at icemaker or door either one, then the valve at the rear bottom of ref needs replacing
I would check the fan in the freezer. Listen to see if it is running
It moves air to the ref from the freezer
Then check to see if freezer control is turned WARMER, which makes the Ref. colder
Also if it is getting drinking water to the door but not to the icemaker (or vice versa) Then you need to replace
the water valve at the bottom rear of the fridge. It is a double valve and one side is not working
Also this might be a common Defrost problem, Ice
is not being melted by the defrost system. The fan can't blow through the coils into the fridge.
Take out back panel of freezer to check for ice buildup. The coils should be clean.
There are three components to a defrost system- a heater, heater thermostat, and a timer unless you have a defrost electronic card.
Its best handled by a Technician but you could possibly do it by taking your model number to the nearest appliance parts store and asking for the parts. They are mostly located in freezer ,behind back panel on freezer coils.except the card which is usually located in ref The parts store will have info
Also check fan undernearh Ref in the rear
Clean condenser coils underneath

Maytag mfd2560hes how to replace defrost thermostat

The service manual 16025629 is here: (7.46 mb)
http://appliancedigest.com/index.php?/files/file/498-16025629-maytag-amana-bottom-mount-refrigerator-service-manual

You will have to register to download the manual.

Freezer Back Panel

NOTE: Freezer compartment should now be empty and

walls should be clear of anything that will

obstruct removal of back panel.

1. Loosen screws that mount icemaker to freezer

compartment walls.

2. Pull icemaker gently away from wall of compartment.

As you do so, work fill cup free of fill tube. Unplug

icemaker electrical connector and remove icemaker

from unit.

3. (Pull out Drawer only) Loosen and remove screws

that hold 2 basket glides in place at left and right

sides of compartment.

4. If unit has no icemaker pry with flatblade icemaker

connection cover. Remove cover.

5. Remove hex head screws that hold back panel and

remove panel.

6. Squeeze tabs on ice maker plug to release it from
back panel

Defrost Terminator (Thermostat)

1. Terminator is fastened to evaporator tubing with a

spring clip.

2. Snap terminator off tubing and cut wires to terminator.
3. Remove terminator from unit.

That is word for word.

See parts list diagram here:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5170924&diagram_id=28480593#d28480593

This may help with screws but the defrost thermostat is item 32 and not shown on the diagram. Once you hav ethe access panel off loof fok the thermostat. It will have 2 wires and tough metal clip on it.

Have a side by side kenmore ref. and the ice machine is not making any ice. The ice maker switch is on and I am getting water. Model on my manual reads 106.58916801. any suggestions.

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. Having determined your icemake is PN W10190960 , here is a link that will help you test your icemaker:

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=12&newsdesk_id=34

The steps are pretty straight forward and will isolate exactly which component of the icemaker / system has failed.

I would like to note that these icemakers are very reliable. They do occasionally fail but most of the time the problem is the freezer is not defrosting properly so the airflow through the freezer is blocked by ice build-up in the evaporator coils due to that defrosting problem.

Your unit has an electronic control board that controls the defrost circuitry.

If you check out the icemaker assy per the first link and still have the problem I would recommend doing a manual defrosting by unplugging the unit. Then remove the contents of the freezer section and place a fan blowing into the freezer section for just over 2 hours. This makes a water mess so be prepaired.

After the manual defrosting cycle restart the unit and reload the freezer contents. After about 12 hours check the icemaker to see if it made any ice at that point. If this solves your icemaking problem it will only be temporary if you still have an automatic defrost cycle problem. Your unit should defrost at least 3 times in 24 hours.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Icemaker not filling with water

Try using an hairdryer or defrosting the unit completely , this often get rid of blockage caused by frozen lines fixing the problem.

The water lines can also be unblocked from dirt using a thin flexible shaft. This after defrosting.

If all that does not fix the problem, then you may need to replace the water valve, the icemaker solenoid, or the whole icemaker assembly.

Freezer is almost always running....

If you look at the icemaker, you will see a metal wire which runs along the side of the unit. If you manually swing the wire arm up until it locks in place (about 90 degree swing from the normal straight down position) you will have turned the icemaker off. (Alternatively you can unplug the electrical plug from the icemaker which goes into the freezer wall.)
If the icemaker is not turned off, it will periodically cycle, which turns on the ice cube mode release heater during it's cycle, putting unnecessary heat into your freezer. You do not need to plug the ice maker supply line. This should be a Fix-Ya for your refrig.
