Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

How can I determine if my DMD, video board is bad on my Samsung DLP. The pixelation others have described is the green squares or white pixels on the screen I guess that are there while the picture is still playing. What I experience is only a brief pixelation before the screen goes blak and white, freezes and then dark with sound still present. TV then will not shut off with remote and needs unplugged. I can likely replace the component but I don't want to spend a lot of cash to find out I need to spend for a light engine or something very expensive.

Heres, your best bet Google to Encompass Parts Distribution and Type in your model number They will list Parts and prices for Light Engine
1-800-638-3328 and UED is another Company you can Call for Rebuilt
Lifght Engine 1-800-648-6657 ,Also Look on Ebay for Part After you know Part Number for correct Light Engine sometimes you can find a better deal on them.Light Engine is what you need to replace. While you are Looking on Encompass or call ask them for Price of DM board. If you are going to try the DM board first ask if they have a return policy ,also Ask Does replacing the Light Engine included DM Board with it?

What all does the light engine include? Will I need to worry about any other component boards or expensive parts to go bad. I didn't mention before that the picture looks fine for about 10 minutes before this happens. I havent replaced the lamp which has over 13000 hours on it. No chance it could be related to a lamp going bad even though I get now lights indicating its the lamp and it continues to be lit after screen goes out. Will I need the entire light engine or is that just a good idea? Thanks,

What all does the light engine include? How do you know it is the light engine? If they can accept reutrns that would not be a problem but don't want to put out probably what will be a lot of bucks and it now fix the problem. I didn't mention that the picture looks great for about 10 min before this happens and that the lamp has over 13000 hours on it which is a lot but no indication that its going bad but if it is could it affect the screen going dark like this? thanks

OK.Lets back up Samsung is Famous for Bad Color Wheel it has to turn 9,000rpm per second if it turns too slow or to fast set will not work correctly? Have you been hearing a squealing noise while playing? You can Pull Lamp out and use a flash light to watch Color Wheel turn to see if it stops running, this could very well be your problem!

If your Light Engine was defective most of them will keep playing with spots or have blue /Green picture.and set does not shut down. But Color Wheel if defective will shut set down.

  • jrader Jul 07, 2010

It doesn't shut down. I still have sound with dark screen, occasional flicker of pixel or two. I found a light engine for $329.00 with color wheel. I have already replaced the color wheel. The one before it was not making a noise that I noticed but the sears guy did which is why I replaced it. I noticed that the light engine can include the lens, DMD board, color wheel and the video boards. I'm starting to see the break down of the varioius parts. Now that you indicated that the CW can cause the problem, like the Sears guy, I wonder if I could have a bad replacement CW. That would seem unlikely. If not that what is the part of the light engine, other than the DMD board that could be the problem? I can get the DMD board only for around $159.00 and possibly avoid haveing to get the LE with the CW again since they have it bundled together. Sorry for so many questions but i think I'm narrowing it down.

  • jrader Jul 07, 2010

I putting this in again because I'm not sure i replied correctly last time. Just saying I have replaced the color wheel which wasn't makeing any noice that I could hear. Sears tech said what you indicated that it can affect the TV this way. Color wheel keeps running and TV does not shut down, sound is still present with previous CW and current one which was replaced new. If I replace just the DMD board instead of the entire light engine which as I see it in some cases is just the DMD board and the lens, light tunnel I guess but is it likely the non DMD parts are causing the problem. I cand get the DMD board for $159.00 but if its some other part of the light engine I don't think I can get that seperate, excluding the CW and video and audio board of course which are included in some of the light engines. The light engine I have located with the board and CW is only $329.00 but don't want to get what I don't need.

I would start with the DMD Board first,if it has a return policy just in case you do have other problem

This way you are not buying something you dont need. Make sure the DMD comes with IC mounted inside of Board, I have heard of some replacement boards coming without the main IC.

Samsung also has been known for Bad Capacitors on power supply board have you checked it for any that look swollen, vented or puffed up on Top? 220uf 10v 3300uf 10v 1000uf 16v? Capacitors should be Flat as a board on top.

Hi,Yes your problem sounds like the DMD board. This is how it works: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/dlp1.htm Basically the light of the lamp goes through a tunnel that carries a color wheel(rotating disc with a gamma of colors that creates the colors on your tv)then the light of the lamp goes through the DMD board which is a chip composed of around 2 million pixels that creates the images and colors. When it starts to fail it will create black bars, pixelation, color distortion or white dots on screens. Here's a video that will help you find where the DMd chip is located : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jr_9A5Xd2Q Have a blessed one!

Samsung DLP model#HLP4663w.green hue on the screen, what is the solution to my problem.

Hi,It sounds like it could be the color wheel or DMD.The color wheel is a rotating disc that has a gamma of colors it spins at high rpms. The light of the lamp goes through it to create the colors on your tv.When it starts to go bad you will get color distortion ,black and white picture and sometimes you will hear humming noises. The DMD is another possibility. Here's a video that will help you find where the DMd chip is located : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jr_9A5Xd2Q One simple test is to display menu and if it's affected then most like will be an issue w the DMD board.Found the complete set with color wheel and DMD included here: http://www.discount-merchant.com/SAMSUNG-30407272050-Light-Engine-w-Color-Wheel-p/1139314.htm Have a blessed one!

White spots are just emerging on my 46inch

There seems to be an issue with your DMD board, which is the on in charge of the pixelation. What you can do to confirm if it's indeed the DMD board, is the following: GO to the menu on the TV and if the dots show in the menu, it's your DMD board, but if they don't the issue might be with one of your Video Boards.

ok well it seems to be an issue either with yoru DMD board or your Digital Video board, go to the menu and if those white spots are also showed on the menu, the issue is with your DMD board, but if they're not showing, the issue would be with your Digital Video board

DLP With White pixels scattered all over the screen some fliker some don't

The DMD chip has gone bad. Check to see if you are still in warranty. Samsung has a one year parts and labor warranty on your set. If your set is out of warranty then ONLY the DMD Chip needs to be replaced. DMD part# is 4719-001997

Here is the solution, it's on a forum. You problem is a faulty DLP chip on the DMD board:

samsung claims it is not a problem, but I've seen HUNDREDS of people with this problem. A facebook page has been made to attempt to get samsung's attention:
