You can but isn't worth it, unless you are good at soldering and fixing electronics, you are better off buying a new one if you don't know what you are doing. sorry is a good place to start your hunt if you really want to fix it they should have what you are looking for you will have to take apart and look for code on the part its self and look it up and may just be a wire connection problem to and may just need to replace the wire's that is what I had to do with mine the wiring was bad so just cut new ones and soldered the new ones on but be very careful not to touch the chips or boards when doing the fixist ok good luck and have a good day

Using Western Digital Hard Drive as External Hard Drive Problems

OK! First of all try to disconnect all usb's from neighbouring usb ports as they might be using up too much current resulting in your HD not having enough power to be powered up properly! Also, try to use a different usb port.

If all these fail, please use a voltmeter (if any available...) to check if your devices actually function...

Hope this helps! If not, please report back!

It seem the hard drive broke when you dropped it. If the correct part has been ordered then fit it! I have done this many times using second hand disks and empty hard drive boxes.
Having done this ask again if stuck.

My Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB hard drive was working fine, until the power cord was removed accidentally. Now I can't get any computer to recognize the drive when I plug it in the USB...

Is the power light on, if not replace the power supply.
I f you have light then your hard drive is shot or the circuit inside the box is fried.
If it is out of warranty and you have another Western Digital Sata drive handy you can swap it with the one inside to see if the drive is bad.
Good luck.

Broken Western Digital 320GB external hard drive...

You will either need a soldering iron or you'll have to improvise some sort of reflow method. Does it look like the copper traces & tabs are still there or have they been lifted when the port was yanked off? If the are still intact, you may be able to resolder the USB port, maybe an electronics savy friend with a soldering iron will help you with this. If you want somebody else to do it for you there is Data Recovery NYC. Also there is good information on logic board repairs on

Western DIgital 500 GB litght flashes but not working

I discovered that the wrong power adapter was plugged into the Western Digital My Book which is why it was blinking two times a second and fried it. Plugged in a 24v instead of the 12vThe tech support person at Western Digital ignored the information of the blinking light. I fixed the hard drive issue by removing the cover (no easy task) and installing it as a slave drive on my computer. I am backing up that hard drive using another Western Digital My Book.

I would suggest to anyone who has the problem of frying their Western Digital hard drive to make it a secondary drive on your computer. My item was under warranty, but all they would have done is replace the product and not recovered the data. They gave me references on whom to send the problem hard drive to.

There are a couple of videos on youtube showing how to remove the cover. I wound up using credit cards and a DVD to pry it apart. I was fearful that a screwdriver could create noticeable tampering.

HP Computers using XP will not show drive to which Western Digital 320GB external harddrive is connected

Your usb device could be finished or your USB ports may not be strong enough/ enough power to run the device.
