Question about ViewSonic VG2021m LCD Monitor

2 Answers

Viewsonic VG2021m does not work. I took it apart and didn't see any bad caps. Power supply seems to work, 13.8V at O/P pin and 5V at O/P pin to second card. The light on the switch doesn't turn on and monitor remains dark. Can Power supply work and card not work?

wirlin, If dc rails are ok, then it could be that the inverter circuit which generates 600 to 1000 volts ac to power the cold cathode fluorescent lamps has failed. Do you see any "surface mount" fuses on the printed circuit board that may be "open" ?? Have you examined the all the solder connections of the driver and power transistors for the inverter circuit for "thermal fractures" that might occur over time due to "thermal cycling" of unit over it's lifetime? Are there any discolored areas of the printed circuit board (smps/inverter) to indicate thermal stress? What brand name of electrolytic filter capacitors are installed on smps? Do you know the "flashlight test" to check if data is on the lcd screen? Will known good monitor work perfectly with your pc? Yes, smps can be ok, but vga to digital lcd screen interface board have failed. 12fixlouie

Can I test the voltage Output to the lamps?

Not unless you have High voltage AC probe that can handle at least 2000v, firing voltage for the CCFL is around 1500~1800v.

You can force the inverter circuit to turn on by supplying 3.5~5v to the inverter ON control pin, In the LCD monitor, the 5vdc (logic) and the 12~18vdc are already applied to the inverter circuits, it just need the trun on command ffrom the logic board to turn on the inverter circuits, that is how it can go into standby or when it does not sense the video signal from PC to save power.

I do not remember which pin that is the control pin on the logic board that feeds the inverter/power supply board.

Turn on viewsonic vg2021m comes on for a second then goes blank. after turning on and off for 10 or 15 tries unit comes on then stays on

Look for bad caps with domed tops as shown here:

Replace them in a set.

Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). Two capacitors on my Viewsonic VG2021m popped so had them replaced, no others appeared even slightly dommed to signify they had blownm though the monitor still isn't working. Plug it in to the wall and...

Bad cap can look normal but can have high ESR, I always replace them in a set, and you should use LOW ESR type with 105c rating since we are dealing with switching power supply here. Look at the bottom seals also.

More likely to be bad DC filter caps in the power supply just like the rest of VIEWSONIC and ALL other brand here:

Hello, I ordered a Viewsonic VG2021m monitor a while ago, and recently, the monitor shows nothing but black when plugged in. All cables on it have been checked, and my computer acknowledges it is there,...

This is 2006 model year, more likely to have bad caps problem in the power supply, look for caps with leaking/bulging tops first, also look to see if you do have 12~18vdc feeding the inverter circuits.

This your power supply/backlight inverter board:

I have a VG2245WM Monitor it has power and pc signal but very red

The caps can be bad with high ESR with no sign of bulging/leaking: http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/Bad%20capacitors/

If you get pinkish glow and dimmed screen, it can be bad lamps: http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/Bad%20backlight%20lamp/

I will still suspect the caps first. Check to see if you do have about 12~18vdc feeding the inverter circuits.

I can easily see 4 bad caps (black case) with bulging tops, the other two caps (green case) should also be replaced at the same time, use only good caps, PANASONIC FM or FC series from DIGIKEY, higher value and voltage are OK to use. Learn more about what bad caps look like:

VG2021M monitor - will not power on. Power light just blinks.

Blinking power light is usually an indication or a problem with the power supply or the inverter in the monitor.
You would have to take it to get it fixed.
If you have the ability to take it apart and send me pictures of the boards to bammbamm@ptd.net, I may be able to tell you if it has obvious problems.
I repair a lot of viewsonic boards, I just have not done that model yet.
