Gooday Toshiba Experts, My 30MB hard drive HDD2181, has apparently a lot of bad sectors. I am able to format it with a recovery CD. Recovery process is aborted repeatedly. The laptop is Satellite...

With so many bad sectors preventing a format, I would recommend the purchase of a new hard drive. You will most likely need to buy an IDE 2.5" hard drive for your laptop. However, you should double check the manual to see if it uses IDE or SATA. You can get whatever size hard drive you want for it.
I wouldn't recommend any manufacturer over the others, they're all quite similar, almost some people have their own personal preferences. Just look for the correct drive type, space you want, at the price you want. Don't focus too much on the manufacture.
The new drive can be formatted with a recovery CD, however it would be easier to format with the Windows CD when you reinstall the operating system.

Hi every bodey i have did format my laptob it's sony vgn-cs230j/w he is an american system so the did gone i dont know how ,i just did format the laptob and i did install another windows then after time...

It seems that you have formated you laptop with CD. It has formated the recovery drives so you need to reinstall your laptop with CD if shipped with the laptop. F11 would not work in this scenario if you have already formated the Laptop with other CD coz whenever you format the drive and create partition with any third party CD it normally delete the Recovery partition from the laptop. If the case is such then you cant get back you old recovery partition. But you can create a recovery disk from the same laptop if you can find... one with any friends etc and then re-image your laptop with that disk. After that all the setting will be back. Or you can contact with SONY support for the same issue they can provide the same disk.

Hi,
I think your laptop is now really messed up and you will need to restore to factoy settings.
I hope you created the Recovery CD/DVD set with the Recovery Wizard when you
first set up your computer, you can restore to factory default settings by
setting up your BIOS (press F2 at the VAIO logo when you first start up) to
boot to the CD-ROM/DVD drive first. Then boot with the Recovery Startup CD.
Choose the option to perform a complete recovery

Follow the prompts to insert the various Recovery CDs/DVDs as needed.
As this action will format the drives again, I hope you have made a backup of your data.

If you failed to create the Recovery CD/DVD set you need to
purchase a proper recovery set from Sony.

When i do the recovery cd and system cd - the acer notebook have a error #49 write fault message

Hi there.
There is a strong possibility that the hard drive has bad sectors on it so the recovery CD cannot format it or cannot write to the hard drive.
If the PC is still under manufacturers warranty i recommend you take take advantage of that, if not then take the hard drive out of the laptop, attach it to another computer as a slave device and try to format it, if it formats put it back in run the recovery CD again, but this time just install the OS don't format it.
If symptoms persist consider using a new hard drive.

Please post back with the results and thanks for using FixYa!!

Stepbystep procedure for formating

Hello jerapur_123 What you'll need:
  • Recovery CD or Restore CD from the MFG
  • WIndows Operating Disk 98 or ME, 2000, XP or Vista.
  • A CD Rom Drive
  • Or a Floppy for low level formatting.
Key Steps to Formatting
Back it Up!
Before the format process, you want to make sure that if your goal is hard drive recovery, you back-up as much personal data and information from your hard drive as you need. In some instances where a virus has caused serious system damage, this may not be possible, but if your format is planned ahead of time you certainly can copy and archive data off your hard drive before you start the format process.

How to Format
If you purchased your computer from systems vendor such as a Dell, HP Compaq or Gateway system, you most likely will have a set-up or a restore-and-recovery CD (also referred to as a master CD) that came with the system. If this is the type of system you use, then a format is an easy process as the master CD by inserting the CD into your CDROM, will format the hard drive, reinstall your Windows operating system, and install any software and programs that came with the system. If you no longer have your master set-up CD, you should contact the manufacturer to get a replacement.

How to Format without a Recovery Disk:

If you aren't using this type of mass-market system, then a hard drive format will consist of you formatting the hard drive manually, installing your Windows OS from CD, then installing your software programs and hardware drivers. Before you begin the formatting process, it is important to make sure you have all your driver CDs located, Windows CD and your software CDs to ensure a smooth set-up.
It's also important to know about your operating system before you format. For example, if you're going to be reinstalling an older version of the operating such as Windows 98 or Windows ME then you should have a Windows 98 or ME start-up disk to complete the procedure. In this instance, you would restart the system with the start-up floppy in the drive. Upon system boot, you will choose to have CD-ROM support. Once the files load you can then choose to run the format command on your main drive (usually C drive). If you are using Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista the Windows installation process offers "format your hard drive" as an option. Here you would ensure your computer is set to boot from CD-ROM (a setting in your system BIOS), insert the Windows CD and restart the computer. From there you will be on your way to reformatting.

As you can see there are many options to formatting a hard drive. Hopefully this gives you a good understanding that most of the operating systems today do the formatting for you, all you need to do is pick that option as you follow the onscreen steps when you install either your Restore, or Operating System.

Good Luck,

Mark

Compaq restore cd

Hi mithz.
I'm not you people.
(Please keep track of the user who you ask a question too).

When you installed windows 2000, (If you formatted the entire drive during install), you might have taken out the small partition that holds data for a system restore. No version of windows likes
you going backwards. In order for you're system restore CD's to work you'll need to format the hard disk drive. Windows will not install if Windows 2000 is found on the drive. The fastest way to get Windows 2000 off the drive without deleting any other partitions Compaq installed would be to go to the hard disk drives manufacture's site & download their setup tools/utilities. You'll be able to creat a bootable floppy disk that will function in a dos-like mode out side of windows. You'll be able to format the Windows 2000 partition. Once that is done you will be able to incert the restore CD (s) & install Compaqs windows XP.
You may need to pull the drive in order to see who made the drive. EX; Seagate, Smsung, Maxtor ect. Here is the link for Seagate. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools
Every manufacture has similar bootable floppy software.
Read the instruction provided by the manufacture on how to create the floppy disk & how to run it.

Good Luck!

Mike

Trying to use the recovery software to rebuild the hard drive back to original. I keep getting error messages that asks me to restart the computer (over and over). One message states that it cannot find...

Most likely the recovery partition is corrupt, or your hard drive has gone bad. the fix for both start with thing. contact the manufacture and getting a copy of the original install CD's. you may be able to find the else where on the net for sale. once you have the CD's use them to reinstall the OS. if you still have the same problem after you have the CD's get your hard drive tested, or replace your hard drive. (a hard drive cost about the same as a diagnostics at most places).
