A dark picture would not necessarily be a symptom of a failing CRT, although it is possible. It is more likely an EEPROM issue since this IC stores settings including brightness, contrast etc. or a suspect jungle IC, but it wouldn't be the tube unless the colour was washed out, dull contrast, weak brightness and poor greyscale tracking (e.g. a pink dull picture with very little green - is a case of a bad tube).

Lamp? if your TV uses a picture tube, the lamp would apply to some rear projection TVs, not your set, so your repairman must either be a junior/amateur or a complete fool - that's what I think.

55 inch Sony Wega rear projection tv...only stays powered on for a few minutes then goes blank, green light steadily burns and the picture is dark. Is it overheating? What do I need to do to fix this?

If its the model indicated here or one similar(kdf-55xs955) you may be seeing a lamp that is about to fail.

A lot of these just before lamp failure will get very dark and if bad enough the set will even shut off.

Picture goes out /sound is always on

Sounds like a bad lamp. That is a common symptom when the lamp is about shot in a sony dlp's. i would definately start by changing the lamp. You can type your model number and the word lamp into ebay and find one there. They cost around a hundred dollars.

Sony wega kdf55 has blue spot in lower right corner - how do I fix

Hi,
That is a symptom of the light engine failing. that is the projector part of your TV where the lamp plugs in. Go to Sony's website to contact them and see if your model is still under extended warranty, if so they will help set up repair. If not it could cost several hundred dollars just for the engine plus labor. Good luck

Picture is dark

Adjust video settings:
  1. Press Wega Gate
  2. Select Settings
  3. Highlight Video
  4. Press + to select
  5. Adjust/increase the brightness.
  6. Press Wega gate to exit.
If picture is still dark, you need to replace the lamp again. Sony recommends that you replace the lamp:
  1. After approximately 8,000 hours of use.
  2. When the screen becomes dark or the color becomes unusual.
  3. When the lamp indicator on the front of the TV flashes.

Faded screen from top to bottom in middle,I replaced the lamp

I had an authorized Sony repairman come to my home. I'm sorry that I cannot remember the part that needs replacing but I can tell you that it cost $700+ and $200+ for labor. We would be stupid to replace it instead of buying a new TV. I doubt I will invest in another Sony as this is a known and common problem with these TV.
