Hi. Easy! Open the front cover and you will see two stickers with red borders in front of you. About 10mm above them is the sensor - dust it with a cotton bud or tissue.
Simples!

I have the same problem and cleaned the sensor but the message won't go away. Any other advice?

  • Marshall Clevenger Jan 11, 2011

The Sensor is really just a small red light just above those stickers. Dusted it with a cotton swab and it works like a Champ! Of course I DID vacuum out and clean the rest of the printer too.......probably needed it :-)

It worked, at least for now!!! Thanks! I tried calling Dell support, got India!, then they wanted $169.99 for a year of support before they would try to help me!

Cleaning sensor with a Q-Tip did the trick--thanks for the good advice! Actually I had to slightly moisten the Q-Tip to get all the dust. I also needed to turn the printer off and back on to reset it after cleaning.

My printer is not new, but I just replaced the PHD unit and received the same error. To fix it I had to clean the CTD sensor.

This link explains how to do that:

Phaser 6128 mfp error sensor ctd

Open up the side panel that houses the toner cartridges. One by one pull out the toner cartridges, with a clean dry cloth clean off the injection port(?) on the cartridge and the injection port on the printer(this will be just inside the where the cartridge locks in. Sometimes these ports get clogged with toner and need a good cleaning, causing a CTD sensor error. Our 6128mfp does this error all the time and we have not had to purchase the new parts to fix the error.

Have you tried cleaning the ctd sensor? I had this same problem, and using a dry cotton swab over the ctd sensor (located on the inside of the front panel) solved the problem for me.

The CTD Unit is a Sensor on or near the Transfer Belt Unit on your Dell Laser Printer. This error is advising that the sensor is dirty and may need cleaned.

If you receive one of these errors please clean the CTD Sensor on the Printer.

I have an orange error light.

If it's not blinking it one of: The PHD (Print Head Device), or belt unit, life is coming to an end. Clean the CTD sensor. Try to clean the CTD sensor with a dry cotton swab. The sensor is located on the front cover (inside).
