I would actually settle for a cd drive at this point

I do have, and have been using, an external USB drive for this, but I'm hoping to fill that large DVD drive sized hole in the side of the computer. I do appreciate the suggestions from joecoolvette, though. I'm going to be shopping for one or more of those this week as mine is rather dated

Just about any mobile optical drive will work just fine. It does have to be IDE, not SATA, and those are a bit tough to find now days.

Here is one:

May I suggest an alternative?
Buy an external enclosure, and install the DVD R/W drive of your choice. The external enclosure just plugs into any available USB port, on your computer.

This is an example of an external enclosure for a IDE optical drive, (IDE is also known as PATA. This is to help differentiate it from SATA.
Parallel ATA. Serial ATA),

This is an example of an external enclosure for a SATA optical drive,

An example of an IDE optical drive unit, that I have used for 3 years with no problem, and have installed the same unit in a clients computer.
4 years, and all is well.

Actually a slightly older model version, but this one is comparable.

Info about the LightScribe Technology,
(You have to use LightScribe disks made by HP. Slightly higher in cost than non-LightScribe one's)

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).

Clientpro 414 won't read a dvd with an iso file.

Judging by this review, your computer possesses a CD drive and NOT a DVD drive.

Your best luck at installing Linux (Good choice for an old computer by the way) would be to use a USB Drive for the installation.

You should find the instructions for creating a USB Drive and for booting from live USB on the website of the Linux distribution you're trying to install.

Good luck!
