Disconnect ALL the hard disks AND ALL the cd/dvd roms. Try to boot. Sometimes wrong configuration at these devices make this result. After pressing F2 wait for the bios setup, it may take long.

Tried disconnecting DVD/CD and hard drive. Made no change to startup screen. When starting PC keyboard does not flash lights as would normally be done at startup. It is like the keyboard is not being recognized by the system motherboard. Which is brand new and runs in another PC fine.

    technical114,

I want to thank you for the ideas about unplugging the HD and DVD/CD. These disconnects did not make a difference to the problem, but it gave me the idea to unplug the USB cables from the motherboard, which has seemed to solve all the problems this PC was having. I analyzed the 2 USB ports in the front panel and one looks like it has been damaged. I didn't notice this before.

    Thanks again

Since there is no keyboard on your system the pc is not booting up. Try to connect a keyboard (PS2 is better) and post me back.

The next step in this boot process is to start Windows. I would guess that your system is freezing at the Windows OS load. If your are tapping F2 before it stops at this screen, and still does not go to the setup BIOS screen, you may have a hardware problem, maybe motherboard. See what happens when you hold down the F8 key while it is booting. You should hear beeps. f the system does boot to Windows safe mode by using F8, you have to reinstall Windows. If it does not go any further than the DELL screen, try booting with the original system disk in the CD/DVD drive, pressing F12 from the very beginning. Do not wait until you see the prompt. If this works, reinstall Windows.

I am sorry I forgot to list the purchase of a new motherboard that does work, but makes no change in this PC. F8 does not work, F2 does not work, F5 does not work. Original Windows Vista CD does not work in CD drive. The Keyboard acts like it is not recognized. Any other suggestions?

What is the f2,f8, r f12 want work? only the Ctrl+ Alt+ del that wroks

F2 usually takes you to the BIOS setup screen, you need to hit the keys as soon as you power up.

F12 selects on a Dell instant boot menu to select booting from CD-ROM, USB, etc rather than the BIOS options.

F8 goes to safe mode start up for windows, this must be done before the windows logo comes up (ie when it is a black screen).

Control - Alt -Delete Keys together can be used any time, after windows boots as it tells it to re-boot the computer, back to start up.

Dell dxp061

probably dead ram stick Also try F2 and reset the Bios settings.
you could try to take a stick of memory out and see how that works.
its also possible that your hard disk is failing.

Linux mint 12 won't boot from CD

Restart your computer, press repetedly a key to enter BIOS, normally Del, go to Advanced BIOS Features probably and change to boot primarly from CD/DVD (1st Boot Device CD/DVD , or something like that), save and exit BIOS, and restart your computer with Linux Mint CD inside. Be aware that if you make wrong changes in BIOS, you could damage your computer.

How do I know if my boot ste up is correct

If your PC doesn't boot up using the hard drive, you can check that by looking for the F2 or F12 displayed on the screen during boot up. Then start pressing F2 or F12 quickly to get setup.
In setup follow the directions and set your "boot device" to "hard drive"
Hope this is what you needed.

It wont boot, goes to black screen with whit blinking dash

Yes, this sounds like the traditional black screen issue, but it's different! This machine is a Dell Dimension 3000 with XP. System won't boot. After Blue Dell BIOS splash screen with F2 & F12 options, it just goes black. There will ultimately be a white cursor in the upper left hand corner. I can edit BIOS with F2, I can get in to the boot menu with F12, but I can't do anything after that. I can even get in to the Safe Mode menu (F8), but it never boots.

How can i boot my dell studio from cdrom so i can reinsall from external drive?

Turn on the machine, press F12 once the Dell splash screen is displayed, the boot menu will show up. From the Boot Menu, use up-down arrow keys on the keyboard and highlight the CD/DVD/CD-RW and press Enter. You will see another menu, select "Boot from Cd-Rom" and press enter to select it. The system will boot up from the CD-Rom. Please note that this settings is only for one time boot, once the system is restarted, the boot sequence will be restored to the previous saved settings. If you wish to set it from the Bios, enter the Bios settings by hitting F2 or Delete (should be shown at the bottom of the Dell splash screen) while you see the Dell Splash Screen. In the Bios settings menu, go to Boot options and make the changes with the boot sequence.

Let me know if you need further help.

Good Luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

How do I access the screen that shows BIOS options as I wish to upload UBUNTU 11.04 from a pendrive, so I want to make my first and possibly second BIOS options to be for the pendrive.

At boot time repeatedly pressing either, F2 , F12, or possibly Fn+F1 this is depending upon the bios wether it has been updated or upgraded. One of these should do the trick.....

What is the boot up sequence please

You need to go inside BIOS to find out whats the boot sequence. To activate the BIOS Utility, press F2 during POST (when “Press <F2> to enter Setup” message is prompted on the bottom of screen).
Press F2 to enter setup. The default parameter of F12 Boot Menu is set to “disabled”. If you want to change boot device without entering BIOS Setup Utility, please set the parameter to “enabled”.
Press <F12> during POST to enter multi-boot menu. In this menu, user can change boot device without entering BIOS SETUP Utility. Navigate to BOOT page on top.

Hope this helps!
