We have windows xp but microsoft 2003 loaded. Files come out as ODT files when we try to open them on another computer Can we convert them to files that can be opened?

It seems you actually have OpenOffice.org installed, not Office 2003. The filetype that it saves as default are ODT files, to solve this:
  1. Open the file on the computer you saved it on, and choose File>Save As.. and select the .doc format.
  2. Or use this site to convert the documents.
  3. To make saving .doc files the default behaviour, open the program, go to Tools>Options, click the Load/Save option on the left, and then General.
  4. In the bottom right, search for "Always save as" and select "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP"

Your best bet is to buy a newer version of Microsoft Works of Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office has a free plug in to read Works files.

However, if your goal is to spend no money, you might want to look at some of the free Microsoft Office alternatiove programs that can read Microsoft Works files.

One that can read Works files is LibreOffice at
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/

Or you can use an on-line converter like
https://secure.convert-doc.com/converters/wps-to-odt.html

to convert the WPS files to something else.

I saved an .odt file from another computer and i can't open it in a 2003 microsoft word. what should i do to open the file?

Hi .odt files will not be opened by MS word as a default. Most likely MS Word does not have the latest service pack. For Windows 2003, download Office 2003 SP2 as a minimum (available from Microsoft)
Download, Install and reboot computer if required.
When PC starts, start up MS Word 2003 which will have SP2 installed.
Locate the ODT file and then double click it. As SP2 for Office 2003 is installed (or MS Word 2003) The file will now open. The formatting might be a little off, but for the most part, all the text will be there and you'll be able to edit and make changes as you see fit.

How do i get into my odt ocument and to convert to

The ODT file extension can be opened in a variety of ways by a number of programs. In Windows itself, one of the most prominent ways of opening it is by using Word itself – with an add-in called OpenXML/ODF translator to help it screen it like a normal .doc file. Other ways include using the StarOffice office suite that comes with a program called Writer – the same as the OpenOffice.org suite. This Writer is an open source clone of Word and is charmingly fulfilling in its rolesOther programs include AbiSource’s neat word processor called AbiWord – a very light and feature rich word processor. This program can also invoke spelling checks and other measures that usually feature in full fledged and large proprietary.....hope this helps please vote thanks

Want to convert odt files to doc files

Providing that you have the OpenOffice writer software installed on your computer the process is quiet simple.

1. open the .odt file using OpenOffice writer
2. from the top menu bar select File and choose Save As from the drop down options or Press (Ctrl+Shift+S)
3. click the down arrow on the Save as type text box near the cancel button.
4. Choose the .doc version you want
5. click save

If you don't have OpenOffice on your computer it is free to download http://download.openoffice.org/ and then use the steps outlined above
OR
online you can go to http://www.freefileconvert.com/ where you can simply do it online by uploading your .odt file and selecting which format you wish to convert it too.

01 - I Am A Pilgrim - Alabama.mp3 <- WHY mp3 on there?

Computer keeps all its files with an extension. This is basically for the computer to know what associated program it should use to read that file. Here, the mp3 extension means it is a music (song) file, and it should open a medial player to read that file. For example, documents have a .doc or .odt extension. There are several more. When computer sense that extension it will open MS word or open office.
