Hello there
Many serial port pins use several of the pins but sometimes not all of them It depends upon how the serial port is wired internally on which pins it uses.
But if yours indeed does not work you will have to have it replaced by a computer repair shop or sombody that is able to unsolder the old one from the board and have a new one resoldered one this generally costs about
100 dollars ok hope this helps
Best regards mike

1. Does YOUR charger work on her computer? If yes, you need to replace her charger.

2. If YOUR charger doesn't work on her computer, then the problem is most likely a broken power jack (or a "cold solder joint" on the power jack). The power jack is mounted directly on the motherboard, therefore the entire computer needs to be disassembled to repair it. Here's a link to a YouTube video showing this repair:

How ck if serial port is working (Dell e5500)

You can only check it by connecting and serial cable. Drivers are automatically installed so no driver required.. 99% of the time serial port is ok but you are probably not using proper serial cable, there is straight cable and there is null cable in serial. You have to make sure which one is required for your purpose and get proper one.
