Question about Edimax EW-7206APg (EW7206APG) 802.11b/g Wireless Access Point

1 Answer

Lost contact between PCs connected via AP

My set up is like this:
Cable modem
V
Checkpoint Router (DHCP)
V V
PC XP Pro-SP2 Edimax EW7206APg
V
2xlaptops (XP Pro-SP2) + 1 PC Vista SP1

Problem is that every so often, all the PCs lose connectivity between themselves. Internet connection works, but you can't "see" the other PCs (either wireless or hardwired) on the local network. You can't even ping their IP addresses. Resetting the AP clears the problem for a day or two.

All the PCs take their IP addresses from DHCP on the router. DHCP on the AP is disabled.

If there was an actual hardware problem with the AP, I'd expect it to disrupt internet service too, so it's quite baffling.

Edimax support advised me to update the AP firmware, and drivers for the wireless cards - but that hasn't helped.

Any ideas?

Mark - thanks for the advice. I configured the PCs as you suggested, but after a couple of days they "lost contact" again - although as ever, the internet connection works fine.

I've now turned off DHCP on the router, and enabled on the AP - there are occasionally "guest" devices that I can't really set static IPs for. Maybe that will make a difference.

Set all the PC's to have a manual IP rather then using the DHCP from the router.
Also set the Gateway and Preferred DNS on the network cards to the routers IP (IE 192.168.0.1)

How set password

You need to download the manual for this Middle East version of the access point/ wireless extender. Page 4 covers resetting the router so a new password can be put in.

http://us.edimax.com/edimax/mw/cufiles/files/download/manual/transfer/Wireless/EW-7206APg/EW-7206APg_PDg-Manual-EN.zip
If you press and hold the reset button for more than 4 seconds, the Access Point will reset to the factory defaults (Warning: Your settings will be deleted and replaced with the factory default settings).

The DHCP of the router has not been set-up, you need to follow these instructions to access the router by making changes to your computer. You also need to connect to the Ethernet port direct with a cable to program the router.

What IP is your Internet Modem using? If they use the same IP you'll have problems.

Your PC is connected wirelessly or directly via ethernet cable?

If you hare directly connected and you have your router set to enable DHCP, you should get an IP address. I assume you are familiar with networking enough since you know how to open command prompt and ping your router. Make sure that you get an ip (ipconfig). If not, make sure your cable is good and connected solidly and ensure DHCP is enabled on your router. If you are using static, just make sure the IP you assign to your desktop is in the same subnet. If you have a 255.255.255.0 subnet you can have 254 hosts on your network and they all have to be 192.168.1.X where X will change.

Search in google about how to set up a DHCP server for your router and clone the modem's MAC address, most routers have this option, the thing is some ISPs limit the use of internet to only one machine, by cloning the modem's MAC address in your router you'll make the ISP believe there's only one machine connected to the Internet. By setting up a DHCP server in your router you'll use only one IP to connect all machines using a private network, that should solve your problems. Try both alternatives, and see which one works.
Please check the legal limitations of this procedure for your country or state and have a nice day! ;)

Both devices support DHCP.
You may have to set the Netgear router into "Bridge mode".
Open your browser and type:
http://192.168.0.1/
Hit enter
Default user name and password are:
admin
password

Under Device mode select Modem only.
Note:
One in the "Modem only" mode the Netgear router will act as a simple modem, its IP address will have no relevance except for connecting to the wireless Lan range extender to change settings or reconfigure. Remember this IP address.

AP wizard may help found here.

Good luck!
Tip: A good rule of thumb is, "Only ONE device may obtain the DHCP otherwise confusion could occur."

If the Internet light is off then there is a problem with the phone line to the ADSL modem or the modem is faulty or there is a problem at the telephome exchange.
Disconnect the phone cable at the ADSL modem and connect a phone handset to this cable - check for a dial tone and that you can dial out.
If you don't get a dial tone, use a different or new phone cable.
If the phone line is OK then : -
Ring your ISP to get them to test your connection to your ADSL
modem.

DHCP option is disabled when LAN IP is Dynamic on DWL-G700AP

that is right the access point does not have a dhcp server. that will give an ip address to all of your computers or device connected to it wireless. If you have a modem with a dhcp server there will be no problem with the IP but if the modem does not you must have a router and now an access point.

NO IP or MAC displayed

Solution: IP of 0.0.0.0 means your DHCP server is not providing configuration settings to your network card. Reset router/access point by pressing the reset button with your finger, the tip of a pen, or a paper clip for at least 30 seconds. Try again! If this solution doesn't work, try turning off computer, turn off router/AP, and DSL/Cable modem. Turn on devices in reverse order. First power on modem, then router/AP, then computer. Connect to router/AP and see if it provides IP. If this solution doesn't work, your DHCP settings are not configured correctly. See router's manufacturer manual or visit their Web site.
