The meat storage drawer no longer cools properly.

It stays at about 45 degrees, and the fan behind the drawer doesn't seem to be turning on.

Defrost it then and make sure there is enough room for air to circulate. Sometimes ice build up can keep the fans from turning.

yes you could be hearing the freon running thru the sealed system. it might be normal, and also you could be hearing the unit going thru a defrost cycle. either way its not likely a problem. just keep an eye out for food getting warm. ice cream, breads and juices need to be at zero degrees to be solid. meats can still be rock hard at 20 degrees. if your unit is not cooling then you will find those items getting warm first. make sure the door is closing properly before you call for service!

This is known as the CZT or Climate Zone Technology fan and if you direct wire it and it does not run, replace.
This is the cold zone fan which supplies cold air to the meat and crisper drawers.

The refrigerator compartment thermostat may be the culprit. If you can remove it, you can check its calibration with iced water. Make sure you check the fan motor and the fan blade condition.

My GE Refrigerator model GSL25JTFBBS stay in

Good day,
35 minutes would be considered nominal. That is the amount of time needed to heat up the cooling coils behind the rear panel in the freezer compartment, and then allow it to drain the condensate water out the drain.

The defrost cycle is made up of 2 parts.
The first part involves shutting all fans and compressor off, and turning on the heater/heaters mounted on the bottom of the cooling coil to above freezing. About 10 to 15 minutes.

The second half occures when a defrost thermostat mounted on the top of that coil senses the coil is above freezing. It cuts the power to the heaters, and lets the system just idle, while the water is allowed to drain out of the drain.

If that tstat is working properly, the food temperature is affected slightly but never to an above freezing condition.
The thermostat is a small 1" round disk clipped to the top of the coil.

Only one possibility, but that tstat could be hanging allowing the freezer coil compartment to reach a very high temperature. If so, it needs replaced.

You should also check to see if both fans and compressor start running as soon as the cycle is done.

you've already discovered your problem. its not blowing. if the freezer fan motor is not blowing air through unit, the cold air falls to the bottom of both sides, and warm air at top of both sides as well. On that model, the fan itself may be bad, or it may be the main control board behind the unit. Without properly testing and inspection, I cant be certain if its one or the other or quite possibly both, And I was trained directly from GE about this.

Vegetable and meat draws freezing everything temp@16 deg. f.

Turn your thermostat down. If all the rest of the food was even 45 degrees, it would be okay. The vetable and meat drawers will always be colder, so you set the level for the rest of the fridge at what is tolerable.

5 year old Maytag Wide by Side Refrigerator side not cooling

Same issue with my 6 yr old Maytag side-by-side model #MSD2756GEW. Turned out it was caused by a faulty circuit board. This circuit board is located in the upper right fridge section. Apparently these boards are sensitive to power surges (which we have here in central Texas from time to time.) When the circuit board is fried, it makes a noise like a fan blade malfunctioning and it stops the auto defrost feature in the freezer from working. So the freezer ices up at the back, and the ice prevents the cold air from reaching the fridge section.

Our circuit board (which we thought was a fan) made ominous noises for a few months. (The noise would last only a minute or so and stop shortly after we opened a door). Eventually we noticed that the fridge wasn't as cold and the freezer had snow in it. Finally the board stopped making noise and about a week or so afterward we noticed that the milk had spoiled and the fridge wasn't very cold. The food in the freezer side pretty solidly frozen, thankfully.

In addition to replacing the circuit board, the fridge had to be de-iced or it would not work properly. I put it all frozen into a large camping cooler where it stayed for several hours. I opened the freezer doors and put table fan and pointed a hobby light which gets quite hot, at the back of the freezer. Within 3 hours, the ice had melted significantly so I could see through the grate at the back of the freezer. This really great technician named Tracy, made a special trip to the parts store to get the circuit board and came back within a couple hours, bringing with him a steamer. He removed the back panel inside the freezer section (the coils are behind there) and used the steamer to melt the rest of the ice before he left.

Tracey, who works for a local appliance repair company, told me that about 4 years ago, Maytag started making their fridges with built-in surge protection, so the circuit boards apparently don't get fried on the newer models as they do on my 6 yr old model. He recommended that we put plug the fridge into a heavy-duty surge protector - which we are definitely going to do.

Refrigerator won't cool. Freezer works fine!

Pierce, there was a service bullitin put out on this model. TDR-0010A-B. Had to do with normal freezer, warm fresh food compartment. Maytag issued a kit that included a new thermostat and damper assy. to solve this problem. Bullitin came out in 2002. If you are not having a defrost issue and all fans are running normal, I would call Maytag and inquire about the above posted bullitin, It may be covered. Catriver...post back.
