I have an Olivetti Underwood Lettera 22 that works great except that, in the course of typing, the carriage will "skip" and add a space without the spacebar being hit. It seems almost as if the tab spacing mechanism is engaging, but of course, I'm not sure. Any ideas on fixing this?
If it skips at the same place or skips every 10 or 12 spaces all the time it is a broken tooth on the escapement wheel or rack. It could be in typing you are lingering on the key causing it to spring back a little ans space over.

I have an Underwood-Olivetti Lettera 22 that hiccups occasionally...When I'm typing along like normal, it has a tendency to add spaces after certain letters without me having hit the space bar. It's almost exclusively with the letters around the edges, and especially with the P, O, D, and E keys. I looked underneath and it looked as if some of the key levers were a little loose, but I'm not sure. It sits on a very level surface, so I know that's not the issue.
