May be the problem with your sound device drivers. check drivers cd and install correct driver for your audio device and that driver has to support windows xp. If your drivers cd dont have drivers for windows xp check the motherboard manufacturer website for drivers with the help of your chipset model. I think that written on your system if its a branded one otherwise check motherboard manual
