Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Hello i have Carrier Weathermaker 38tkb air conditioner unit. It's about 6 years old and when i got home today, the unit itself wasn't working. Although the blower fan in the furnace inside was blowing, the fan on the a/c unit outside was not moving. I can hear a humming sound coming from it and once in a while, you hear it trying to kick in (the lights in the house even dim a bit, which is unusual), but it never kicks in. The top center of the unit is extremely hot to the touch. I've checked the circuit breakers and even the pull out on/off switch on the box outside next to the unit and everything seems fine. Any help would be immensely appreciated ? Thank you Claudio

The humming noise and dimming of the lights is an indication something in the outdoor unit is locked up or has failed.

Check the capacitor as it may have gone bad. If the capacitor is good, then you either have a failed motor, a failed compressor, or both.

Couldn't find actual replacement part locally, but got an universal at a local HVAC supply store that they setup for me with the same specifications for less than $30. Everything is now working back to normal. You just saved me a ton, and helped keep my family (mainly my 1 and 7 yr olds), cool in this 100% heatwave we're getting here in the northeast. I love this site. :o)"

SOURCE: Carrier 38tkb not working, but furnace is blowing

It is probably a capacitor problem. Check inside the outside unit. you will see a round cylinder with three groups of terminals on top. If the top of it is dome shaped it probably needs to be replaced. You can check it if you have a microfared tester. However if it is poofed out it probably is bad. If this is not the problem you will probably have to replace the fan motor.

After 18 years of service, it is not cost effective to just replace the heat exchanger. Go the complete replacement route. There may be a utility company incentive to do it.

2003 carrier weathermaker 38tkb unit 40,000 btus 10.5 seer 3.5 ton - what should start amperage be?? is 132 too high tks

as you are running 2.5 or 3 mm wire for the unit , at 132 amps the wire would melt
check the setting of the amp meter as it is more like 13.2 amps which would be about right
use an example , check the size of the wires from a battery in a car and that size wire carries 400 amps minimum when starting a car, then check the wire size to the unit
all compressors start with a high current draw ( 25 amps ) but it drops of to running current after a 1/2 second or so

I have a Carrier Weathermaker SX HVAC unit with a Honeywell thermostat. Even if the thermostat is turned "off", my fan keeps blowing!

Hello, usually this is a sign of a bad blower relay on the intergrated control board. The only option is to replace the control board.

Carrier Weathermaker 8000 turns off intermittently

You can find what the error code is by looking on the inside of the bloewr panel. If it is still there after all these years there is a code list right around the wiring diagram. If my memory serves me correctly it is a limit problem. But be for sure and check the code sheet.

Your blower motor may have failed. Check the blower motor for the air circulation and you may find it is hot but not running. Have the motor replaced if this is the case.
