It means that some files needed for windows to restart are missing, probably a system file or boot files. Some windows xp users usually re-install and repair their windows xp system using their original windows xp install disk and selecting the "repair" ooption. But another practical solution is to note down the missing file, then,on another PC using the same system, search for that file and copy, though you will have to note the folder location of that missing file from another PC. Boot your PC (the one that doesn't boot) with a system diskand on the command prompt (DOS prompt) copy the missing file from yourcopy disk to the same location where the missing file should be situated.

If the practical suggestion wouldn't work, then you have to re-install your windows on top of the current installation using your windows cd to repair yourwindows sytem, if this still doesn't then you have to install a new windows systemlocated in a different location in your disk, this way you still go to your saved files and backup your files.

Ntfs is missing

To resolve this problem, replace the missing or corrupted Ntfs.sys file:
  1. Use the Windows Vista startup disks or the Windows Vista CD to restart your computer.
  2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to select the To repair a Windows Vista installation using Recovery Console, press R option.
  3. Type the number of the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console, and then press ENTER.
  4. Type the administrator password when you are prompted, and then press ENTER. If no administrator password exists, just press ENTER.
  5. At the command prompt, type the following commands (press ENTER after each command): cd \windows\system32\drivers

ren ntfs.sys ntfs.oldNote This step renames the corrupted Ntfs.sys file to Ntfs.old. If the Ntfs.sys file is not found, the file is missing.
  6. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: copy cd:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\driversWhere cd is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows Vista CD, and drive is the drive where you installed Windows Vista .
  7. Remove the Windows Vista CD from your CD-ROM drive, type quit at a command prompt, and then press ENTER to quit the Recovery Console.
  8. Restart the computer.
  9. rate me 4 thumbs up please

Vista home premium missing help files

Dont worry if you are missing help files...........just follow these steps...:-
1) get to someother computer which have windows vista premium running. try to find help files in c:/windows directory.
2) Once found copy it into usb and copy those files in your system at the same location from where you have copied them in other computer.
3) Restart system and its done.

Other way is to use vista recovery disk to copy system files ...
Hope it works well for you.........

Your computer has been corrupted by a virus or failing hard drive.
Search for the name of your operating system and repair in Google. (E.g. Windows XP repair)
You will find instructions that will tell you how to boot to your Windows CD/DVD and repair the problem.
Once you get the operating system running back up all of your important files.
Get a new hard disk, install the OS, programs, especially antivirus, and restore your data.
Otherwise, you run the risk of more virus damage or total drive failure.

Good luck!

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt. <windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

This is a posible solution, boot your windows in safe mode with command prompt (by pressing 'f8' as the windows splash screen appears a menu will by prompted with this option), enter this:

C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

in the command prompt and follow the instructions to restore the system.

If this doesn't work the problem may be a faulty hard disk, contact again if your problem persists.
