Question about Danfoss Sundstrand-sauer-danfoss Sundstrand Hydraulic Pump

Danfoss FC202 VLT Start-up problem

I have 4 Danfoss FC202 VFT drives and they behave the same during commissioning time with following problems:
(1)When stating the drive from digital input with a preset reference (40Hz)the drive starts up, frequecy and voltage ramping up, but the voltage just stop ramping up at around 30Hz, and over-current alarm occurs. The drive keeps running but stays at that voltage and frequency, cannot get to speed reference.
If i stop the drive and re-start it a few time, then it will go through that locking voltage and running at speed successfully.
(2)The same thing happens when i start the drive with speed reference from DeviceNet. In this case, the speed reference is varied (PID controlled from PLC) and never have a succesful start like the fixed speed as (1)
Can yo give me an advice on this since changing the ramping up time does not help.

    Hi Funoldman, I attempted to do AMA but the drive didnot go through the precess (i.e. after pressing Hand On to activate AMA, nothing happened, waited for one hour).
    So I tried to change the 1-03 parameter from default to Constant Torque, and can you believe, the drives started happily in both fixed and variable speed reference.
    Anyway, thank for your help.

    Hi Funoldman,
    I sent you a reply recently about the result that i have achieved, not sure if you got it. I had the drives started happily when i changed the parameter 1-03 from default to 'Constant Torque'. They all started happily with fixed speed (digital input on control terminal block) and variable speed reference (PID from PLC). Good fun!!
    Thank you very much for your help, I learnt something extra from your explanation anyway.

I didn't see what these drive application was for. Is it for a fan or pump?
I assume you've entered all the motor data, FLA, RPM Voltage, KW etc. If you have three of these you must have experience with these drives. I've only used these drives on fans, and once on a pump.
Have you tried the Automatic Motor Adaptation ? (AMA) Have you programmed the PID start speed? Read the note about this feature as I think you have to have min speed set at 0 .I know you said you tried changing the ramp up time. If this is on a pump, the ramp up time may be too slow causing the motor to draw too much current when it's pumping way down on the pump curve. People would have a tendancy to make the ramp up time loonger, to make the load easier to start, however the torque requirement on a slower speed could be so high, the motor is overloading. I'd like to know what you find out, pleas post your solution. Have you contacted Danfoss or your local rep?

    Hi Funoldman,
    Thanks for your reply.
    The application I have are for pumps (sludge from a water treatment plant).
    I did not use the Automatic Motor Adaptation (AMA) but will give it a go.
    Can you explain more about the mentioned PID Start Speed?
    The motors data are 37kw, 415V, 71.4A, 590RPM.
    I currently have the Ramping Up Time set at 20s.
    I will let you know how i go with the trial of AMA.

    I believe that is a bit slow for a pump. There are recommend default settings for pump applications listend in their manual. I believe a pump would be closer to 8 sec start up, especially since your motor is only 590 rpm. Also I asummed you entered the voltage, kw, and rpm . Your speed and voltage is not what the default settings would be. The PID start speed is a speed you'd set for the drive to run up to before the pid loop begins controlling speed. You should look at your pump curve and determine what the slowest speed whould not overload the motor, and make your min speed near that. Keep me posted, I'm curious now.

This is now handled by Hydro-Gear. www.hydro-gear.com.
BDP stands for Bantam Duty Pump and the rest of the code calls out the configuration of your pump - shaft, rotation, size, etc.

I have a Danfoss319602A pump for a Case 1845C skidsteer.It needs to be replaced with an updated pump and coupling. Do you have any new #s . thanks Rolf


The 1845C's had a sauer-danfoss m91-46507 or m91-46509 (tandem) for track drive. These units are still readily available. Reman/exchange units are the way to go. You can usually get better delivery and pricing for a hydraulic shop that knows what they are doing then thru case. I can help if needed. kevinmorge@wowway.com
