Chances are that there's dust or lint inside that's keeping the lens from opening. Get a can of Compressed Air ($4 at Walmart), and, holding the camera with lens facing down, spray upward into the lens assembly. Hopefully it will free it up. If that doesn't work, the unit will have to be serviced. Get an estimate first, since it can run a bit, and people often opt to just get a new camera.

easy fix. yo turn it on and then very lightly tap the lens cover or push it out. then you should clean the lens because the dirt or dust on the lens is stopping the lens cover.

Your problem may be due to weak/worn out batteries or corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, chances are that your batteries need to be replaced because they're just too worn to properly power the camera. And then, of course, there's the possibility that your camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.

Lens Cover not fully open

It sounds like a problem with the firmware in the camcorder itself. As an authorized Sony repair person, I have gotten no technical bulletin on this model. The firmware is preloaded into the microprocessor IC. You will need to have this unit looked at by an authorized Sony repair center who specializes in camcorder repairs or send the unit to a Sony factory service center. good Luck

Lens wont go back in

Probably grit in the mechanism. That happened to my Olympus, but after frequent re-trying eventually the problem cured itself. It is unlikely that a repair will be economic as the price of digital cameras is so low.
