Some older Wii units also have trouble with Dual Layer Discs, which pack more info onto a disk like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Metroid Prime. If your Wii is having trouble reading a dual layer disc you can try Nintendo's Wii lens cleaning kit. the other resolution for this is to change the laser on the system but it will cost you for that. Try to clean the lens first it might read the new disk.
Sounds like she has a wii modchip or something installed. Otherwise, you either have a bootlegged Super Mario Bros. disc or there's something wrong with the Wii disc drive. I'm assuming you went through their online troubleshooting support. If you still have a valid warranty, you can send it over to Nintendo Repair and they'll fix your Nintendo Wii up good as new for no charge at all. Not even shipping!

Yup! We had the same problem and the sync button trick posted above worked. Thank you. We found that you first need to select mario brothers, then press the sinc button inside the flap on the consol (red button) then press the sync button inside the battery cover of the second remote.
