Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

1 Answer

I have a Kenmore 90 series washing machine. It stopped running during the rinse cycle and is now full of water and will not drain. It will still fill if i turn the knob around to the beginning of the rinse cycle but won't do anything else from there.

Hello Jennifer, welcome to Fixya.

It sounds like a lid switch problem based on your description.

Can you provide the actual model number ? It should be on a white tag when you lift the lid, it may be hard to see and usually starts with a 110...

Here's a simple way to confirm the switch problem on most kenmore top load washer's but not all, hence the need for the model number...

Lift the lid, if you observe the underside of the lid there will be a plastic "strike" or "actuator" that goes into a hole when the lid is closed.

Check the hole where the actuator goes into the cabinet and insure you can see a gray oval shaped piece. If so take a small screw-driver, pen/pencil or something small enough to fit thru the small hole and try activating the switch by pushing it down ( machine must be in the agitate or spin cycle ). If you don't see it, the switch has likely broken loose and needs to be replaced.

If it start's to function than the switch is not being contacted properly by the actuator on the lid and likely is due to the switch being worn. Make sure it is being held in place via the two screws along the side, if they are loose tighten them, if it is broken, it will need to be replaced.

I'll watch for your reply to see what you find and if I can assist you further with the model number.

good luck.

Model number is 110 22912 100. Nothing happened when I pushed the switch down with a pen. What should I do?

    Hello again,

Thank you for gathering the model number as well as such a prompt reply. Since you went ahead and tried to activate the switch manually with the pen, did you or can you hear it make a "click" sound ?

If it fills as you stated and then doesn't do anything, it is quite likely the lid switch. The number is a whirlpool ( that is who makes your kenmore washer ) # 3949238 and should be available at most brick and mortar appliance part stores. you can also check on-line at vendors such as "" or "" and "". It ranges from around $30 to $40 and will look like the image I've attached below.

Let me know if you here the click sound when pushing on the switch, and we can move forward from there.

I makes a sound, not necessarily a distinct clicking sound though.

I'd say at this point you will need a lid switch.

If you are uncertain about replacing it yourself, check out the link I've attached and I think you'll see it is quite straight forward.

If you still think it is better left to a pro, by all means call a appliance pro to do it first.

Let me know if I can be any further assistance.

    Good luck.

Kenmore 90 Plus Series washer washer takes forever

is the cold water all the way on?

if so, the first thing to do would be to check the screens in the cold water fill hose and the screen in the cold side of the water valve on the back of the machine. if that is not the problem then replace the water valve.

(turn the water off before taking the hose loose)

Washing machine keeps draining during rinse

You may be experiencing a condition known as "siphoning". This is caused by the drain hose not being high enough off the floor, or not having a proper air gap at the standpipe in order to drain properly. This creates a suction and the washer will constantly drain as it tries to fill. The following link explains:

In the majority of the cases, this problem is attributed to improper installation, rather than an actual problem with the washer. If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Sometimes my new machine will not fill with water

make sure that your drain hose is coming up ( 90 degrees ) from the base of the machine. and then drains near or close to the height of the machine. the drain hose at least needs to be at a 45 degree angle to fill properly otherwise it will continuosly drain. hope this helps.

Over running water fill

You have a bad water level selecter switch (Load size) you will need to replace. It's not hard, located inside the console and does not cost much.

Bosch classixx 1000 washing machine - stops on spin

Washing machine stops at the spin cycle - light flashes. Have to drain water out manually. Happened last week and was then able to run an empty rinse cycle. Machine worked normally for another week. Same problem today but have had to drain water manually from the drum after trying an empty 90 wash and rinse cycle (both stopped on the Spin and flashed). Any ideas? Thanks. x
