Our original charger got messed up. We purchased another one from
Walmart. Still nothing. My daughter has the same nuvi, we tried her

Given that you've tried other chragers, it seems likely the problem is battery related - especially if you've already tried steve's suggestion. How old is your nuvi? It is not uncommon for GPS batteries to go down after a year or two as they are subjected to temperature extremes and repeated charges and discharges. If the battery is the problem, it makes more sense to replace it for $30 than to spend another $300 on a new GPS. This can be done easily enough:

The company that produced the video sells a kit which includes the battery and tools necessary to do this yourself if you'd like. See: http://www.newpower99.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=GARMIN+NUVI+205W&Show=ExtInfo

I hope this helps. Happy travels!

Best,
Rob

Connect the GPS to your computer via the supplied USB cable overnight. The USB port on the computer will "reset" the battery to allow it to charge via cigar lighter when in the car or via an included (not all models included an AC adapter) AC adapter.

After an 8+ hour connection to the computer, the GPS battery should be able to receive charges normally again. If at any time if the future, the GPS will not charge, perform this charge method again.

It is also possible that the internal battery is now depleted and will no longer accept charges. In this case, you might want to contact Garmin Customer Support at the link below:

http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/support/supportcontact

Their telephone support is free and is the quickest way to review options or arrange for factory repairs.

I was told by Garmin that I would have one free map update after purchasing the unit. We tried to download the update, but it did not take and would like to know how to re-try the down-load. Can you help...

Yes, just redo the download. Be sure the unit is hooked up via USB and navigate to the Garmin site. The download and install take a REALLY LONG TIME. It is not grab a download and run. Up to hours...you just have to be patient.

Just purchased a Garmin 255W. Works fine if not attached to the car charger. Attached unit to the charge and normal navigation screen disappears. Shouldn't a person be able to drive/navigate and charge...

Hi sudavis70,

yes, you should be able to use your 255w while driving...if its going to the garmin screen ( or the screen with the computer icon) when plugged in to the car charger, then the car charger is probably either bad or not compatible with your unit..if its the original charger, i would buy another one thats made for a garmin.

the only time you shouldn't be able to use your 255w, is when its hooked to your computer.

i fix these and many other gps daily so when considering my advice , please understand i do not google my solutions.

let me know if you need more help or info

My garmin nuvi, which I purchased less than two months ago, no longer loads. It appears to start up with the introductory screen then goes blank. The charger is hooked up and is apparently working.

the battery is either to low or shot,

plug it in to either the home charger, car charger or usb for a few hours and try it again. once it starts, go in the gps main menu and see what the battery meter tells you (what does it look like, is the meter moving ect)

I have a Garmin 760 did not come with a ac

The AC charger plugs into the mini-USB port on the bottom of the unit. The term AC is somewhat misleading as the AC charger plugs into an AC outlet but provides +5VDC to charge the units internal 3.7VDC battery.

You can purchase an OEM AC charger here:

Is there a plug in charger

You can purchase a Music Power Duet USB AC Charger for iPod and MP3 Players or Simitlar. I got mine from walmart, follow the link.

Sounds like you both have a battery problem. I experienced a similar problem when trying to charge via the USB-cable connected to my computer.
Ended up buying an original charger (expensive) and the charging went smooth.
The car charger should in any case work fine, so probably your battery is not very healthy.

Try holding your finger on the battery symbol for about 10 sec. The unit will then switch to a technical page. There you can observe the battery and charging voltage. When I plug in my computer USB-cable, I read around 4,4V and that is not sufficient for charging my battery.
When connected to the original charger, this voltage rises to about 5V which gives a nice charge. When unplugging charger, the unit displays the battery capacity. If the charging voltage is OK, but battery capacity drops quickly after you unplug charger cable, the battery is probably bad. (Of course you have to charge is for some time) I think around 4V battery voltage give 100% capacity. 3,9V gives about 90% capacity.
This will not solve your problem, but can give you an idea about what is wrong.
Good luck.
