Question about Philips 19MDTR20/99 19 in. TV/VCR/DVD Combo

MSD724F switching on and off

Could not find this TV listed on here so I'm posting here. I have a few of these tvs and they all have this same problem in which they turn on and quickly turn off. Before the TV would turn off but the DVD would remain playing. I cannot find any assistance on this online or from Magnavox. Any help would be great. Thanks

I appologize for the misunderstanding but the DVD and VCR are built in.

  • Jesse Weddle Apr 18, 2008

Unfortunately not. I have tried them in my shop and at another home. These were in cabins all on different power before they started acting up as well.

  • Jesse Weddle Apr 18, 2008

Well it only happened on two of the Tv's but it was around the same time.

  • Jesse Weddle Apr 18, 2008

These were all plugged into power protectors but we did have some surges around the time that they had gone out although I cannot remember if the problems occured before or after them.

  • Jesse Weddle Apr 19, 2008

Ive been messing around with it tonight and I have found that when the back cover is off of it it works fine but when its on it turns off in seconds.

  • Jesse Weddle Apr 19, 2008

Alright I have figured out why it won't turn on but have no clue how to fix it. When the Tv's guts are exposed to light, it works and when not, it turns itself off. We just flipped off the light without the back on and presto, it turned off. When we turned the lights back on, they came on as it went with the case coming on and off.

  • Jesse Weddle Apr 21, 2008

I havent tried this on the other one yet. I've tried blanking out the light but ill see if I can make something to do it with.

It could be a power problem at your premises. Have you try the TVs in another building? If they all have the same problem you must look for a common denominator and in this case it's power.

Good Luck.

Then maybe the power in your cabins in causing excessive strain on the power supplies in the TVs over time. If there are a lot of brown-outs and low voltage conditions the power supplies will have to work harder to keep up and can start to fail after awhile.

Did the problems with all the TVs start at around the same time?

A device like this one: http://www.acscout.com/servlet/.1608ccc1... would help you determine of you are having power problems at your site. Maybe your utility company would have some similar devices that you could borrow to test your power conditions.

Any power outages or brown-outs around that time? Are these units plugged into power bars or directly to the wall outlet?

That is strange for sure. Seems there is a light sensitive component. You could try narrowing down you search by blanking out the light from individual board or components until the find the offending component then replacing that component. I can't imagine what component would be light sensitive in a TV like this. Some TVs have an ambient light sensor and adjust the brightness according to the ambient light, not sure if your TVs have this feature.

Also do both your faulty TV do the same thing with and without light?

• If your device does not respond to the remote after trying all codes listed or your brand is not listed in the code list, use the Auto Code Search method to program your remote.
• Sometimes the first code that "works" with your device may operate only a few functions of your device. There may be another code in the code list that performs more functions. Try other codes from the code list for more functionality.
This is a trial and error procedure; and quiet time consuming. You might have to check different codes said for your device.

Panasonic TV DVD/VCR combo turns on but right back off can hear the clicking on the inside .. screen does not even come on..

If you hear a clicking that is the relay which is a sign that the tv has partial power. The rest of the power supply is dead though. Usually it is the voltage rectifier and a wire wound resister maybe some burnt circuit traces. Many tvs lose their fly-back transformer and or the horizontal or vertical output transistor and a handful of electrolytic capacitors. Few people repair tvs these days and even fewer want to keep old cathode ray tube (CRT) types tvs anyways. How much for a new flat screen tv of similar size? Likely far cheaper than parts and labour for the other one.

Need the universal remote code

If it's not in the list of TVs and codes that came with the remote (or should have) it means the set is too old to have been included although it shouldn't apply to DVD combos yet.
Universals are very cheap, however, they sell in £1 or 99p stores here (I'm assuming you're in the USA?) so try another brand and see if your TV is listed. If possible, ask to look at the list before buying. Look online for lists of what remote covers which TVs.
There may be partial success whereby some Sylvanian codes operate the TV section but not the player - or vice versa.
