Question about KitchenAid Food Mixers

1 Answer

Kitchen aid KP26M1X never used. First time turned on and it ran for 10 seconds then shut off. Turned it off and restarted then it ran for 10 seconds then shut off again. Keeps doing this. Would this be thermal protector and would it be easy to change oneself

Hello CANADA43. From the symptoms you describe, I would say that your there is something awry with your mixer’s internal speed control assembly. You said the mixer had never been used and the spotty running started the very first time it was used. Is it still under warranty (have you owned it for less than one year)? If so I’d contact KA immediately and tell them about your problem with the stir speed not working correctly. The KA website is at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home. Click on Customer Care>Contact Us> and the toll free phone number is listed to speak with someone. You can also look under the Warranty & Service Plans to see what KA will do for you. I've extracted parts of it here:
Hassle-Free Replacement Warranty
We’re so confident the quality of our products meets the exacting standards of KitchenAid that, if your mixer should fail within the first year of ownership, KitchenAid will arrange to deliver an identical or comparable replacement to your door free of charge and arrange to have your “failed” mixer returned to us. Your replacement unit will also be covered by our one year full warranty. Please follow these instructions to receive this quality service.
If you reside in the United States and your KitchenAid® mixer should fail within the first year of ownership, simply call our toll-free Customer Satisfaction Center at 1-800-541-6390, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Eastern Time. Give the consultant your complete shipping address. (No P.O. Box Numbers, please.) When you receive your replacement mixer, use the carton and packing materials to pack-up your “failed” mixer. In the carton, include your name and address on a sheet of paper along with a copy of the proof of purchase (register receipt, credit card charge slip, etc.).

If your mixer is no longer under warranty, then you can still replace the control assembly by yourself. Just be sure to have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> enter the visitor type “Consumer” and then Enter the 6 character model number, in your case: KP26M1, and select one of the first two files listed under Parts List (47) (The first file, KP26M1XAZ4.pdf (304.18 KB), is for a -4 series model and the second file, KP26M1XAZ5.pdf (724.41 KB) is for a -5 series with slightly different insides, so make sure you have the correct Parts List manual.)
For a series -4 mixer, turn to pgs. 4 & 4, titled Case, Gearing And Planetary Unit that shows an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the parts. Locate Illus. No. 8, Control Assembly (incl. Knob). (For a series -5 mixer, turn to Pgs 4 & 5, and locate Illus. No. 19, Control Assembly). You’ll want either the black or grey knob contol assembly. The part numbers are the same for both series mixers, so you just need to choose the right color.
Here are five potential online vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com (for grease). Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do some comparison shopping.
Finally, here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer. The mixers displayed in the links are different KA models, but the principles are the same.

Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able to completely disassemble and reassemble your mixer, should you decide to go that route.
If you feel this repair is beyond your capability, then I would seek out a local small appliance repair shop in your area. KA Customer Care can give you names of local KA authorized repair shops in your area, but you can also do an online search to supplement what KA may provide you. Call to explain your circumstances and find out their hourly rate and get an estimate of what they think it would cost to repair your mixer. Also, always obtain three or more estimates – do some comparison shopping. Good luck, I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

I used for 1st time. My cookie dough turned black. Also now have large bump up in middle of bowl.

Take it back to the shop, it sounds like head height adjustment is incorrect from new. I hope you didn't tighten a screw by the inside of the hinge that looked loose. that's your head height adjustment. There is a cone shape at the bottom of the bowl if that's what you think is the bump.

Mixer won't start after mixing dough.

There is a good chance you burned up the electrical Connectors to the motor or you have have blown the FUSE that is located inside the housing. The Motor has a Self Shut Off when it overheats but if you have over taxed the motor more than once, then there is a good change you need to repair/replace it with something that can handle harder work. My sister got a Mix Master the same time I got my Kitchen Aid, My Kitchen Aid is running strong since 2003 and her Mix Master died in 2005 and I bought her a Kitchen Aid. Sorry but I am not fond of the Sunbeam Mixer's.... Quality has gone down hill over the years to keep their prices low.

Kitchen aid professional stops spinning

the pro series 600 has a worm gear, a worm follower gear, a bevel gear, and tree bearings the front rear and thrust bearings any of the above will cause the mixer to halt, to operate noisily, or grind, you need to open it up and look under the transmission cover. If it is an older model it could also be the transmission cover if it is a plastic one, My first thoughts is it is the worm follower gear. hope this helps you in the right direction.

I ran my kitchenaid mixer at the wrong voltage, and the motor sparked. But I only turned it on for a couple seconds. What's the likelihood that I damaged it - and what would be the signs of damage

It wont run anymore or it smokes or it won't run at all. over voltage can short out the armature the stator or the phase control board. It can also short out any of the wires attached to the speed control plate at the rear of the mixer. If you turn it on again at proper voltage and it works the chances are that you have cut the life of the electrical parts by half their life. If it sparks or smokes you have some serious repair work to do to it. The good news is that you can replace all the electric parts for less than $100.00 bucks and an hour or two of you time...OH!!!! and about two rolls of paper towels.

Mixer revs, then shuts off, will not reset

your kitchen aid has a little device inside called the hall effect sensor. These often come dislodged or just stop functioning. If you are mechanically inclined you can replace this yourself.

Kitchen Aid 10 speed 325watts

Some of the gears may have broken or slipped off. You'll need t open it up to see why the shaft from the motor will not spin or you will burn out the motor with the power on trying to make it go. It might be a DIY job if you can see an obvious problem like a slipped gear, otherwise take it to a repair specialist.
