Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have a 52 inch RCA D52W20B that wont turn on. The green light will turn on, stay on a few seconds then shut down. It turns on and off a few times after that but never comes on completely. I called a tv repair man and he said that he couldn't help me. I am in a rural area so I will be trying to do this myself. Anyone know the fix for this, how much it will cost, and can I (no tv experience, some mechanical experience) do this myself? Thanks for any help.

The power LED lights up because the power source starts. It then shuts down because something is causing the power source to stop working.  Only 2 thing can cause a power source to stop working:
1 - the power source itself is faulty - but this is a simple problem that all decent repairman should be able to fix in less than an hour for labor; sometimes finding the replacement parts will be a pain so this is why your repairman probably bailed.
2 - a part of the tv has failed and it's messing up the entire unit so badly and by that drawing so much power that the power source can't handle it and it's blocking itself as to protect itself- this appear to be your case; Finding out what is the failed part will be practically impossible if you don't have at least a basic knowledge of electronics.
On your tv, at this age it is common for this set to fry the flyback power board and new ones aren't produced anymore.
You have 3 options:
1 - you try to fix it yourself - with your complete inexperience you will just mess it more and throw away your money on useless parts.
2 - you get another repairman to take a look - it either fixes it or it will tell you right away to take the third option.
3 - just junk it and buy a new one.

Is it completely impossible to find the flyback somewhere online? I wouldnt mind spending the hundred bucks or so to see if this works. I have been told it could be the deflection board as well. I do have some friends that have more electrical knowledge than I do but want to have a general idea of what the problem could be before draggin them into this. I have replaced the tv already but may want to give it a try before I toss it curbside.

Since you have already replaced the tv this is the perfect opportunity to learn electronics by trying to fix something you are not afraid to break, since it's already broken.

The deflection board contains the vertical deflection system - basically an audio power amplifier with some additional components to generate and control the signal - and the horizontal deflection unit which main components are the power deflection transistor and the flyback transformer. The main purpose of the horizontal deflection unit is dual-fold: to generate the horizontal scan signal and the very high tensions necessary for the tubes so, when this system fails, it's usually because that high tension has fried something.
First you must test and replace the power transistor, then all the diodes and finally, after all these are certified in working order, to replace the flyback transformer with a new on. You can get it from

I have foun a company that will completely rebuild the deflection board. Wouldn't this fix all the components that you have mentioned since they are all part of the deflection board. They are charging $189.00. Is this a far value for their service? And what is the chance that this will fix the problem?

Yes, it's a fair price . Actually it's a bargain - taking your board to a repairman to be fixed would have been way more expensive.

It will probably fix it but i can't be sure, i haven't tested the tv, so i can't guarantee you that. As i said this is the perfect opportunity to learn something: before spending any more money just take your multimeter and start testing the tv. Start with the power source and its voltages - if the high tension (~ 125 volts) that powers the deflection board is low or 0 disconnect the board and see what's happening. If it goes back up you will know for sure the board is busted - fix the board, put it back in and start testing again till you find all the faults .
