Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

I have a Kensington 72237a Pocket Mouse Micro Optical Wireless. I have bought several of these over the years even giving them as presents. My current one seemed to start eating batteries, or so I thought. Today I put a new set of batteries, checked the expiration date on them which is 2012 and tried re-sync the mouse. It worked for a couple of minutes. The batteies are still working as the light is on inthe wheel of the mouse. I tried to re-sync the mouse again and nothing happened. I thought there might be an updated driver on the net or that mine became corrupt. I am running this on a Sony VGN-SZ230P with Windows XP SP3 or whichever the most recent SP is. I love this mouse and have been trying to buy a new one for over a week. They are no longer made and can't find a new one anywhere. I called Kensington and they suggested I buy a 72214. After finding the reviews were so bad and the USB does not store in the mouse turning the power on and off that was reason enough not to buy it. Is there a new driver? Anyway to check my current driver. ANYWAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM? Short of that, anyplace I can buy a new one or someother one that has all the same features and size?

Wow! A real rare piece of gold. I tried my level best to get a reasonable solution to your problem, but;

  • No Driver update by the Vendors.
  • There are alternates, but yes as you said a very matching alternate is 72214, but as you said you aren't satisfied by the End User reviews, so better stick to the tested thing.
  • I tried to find this over and over, but everywhere its out of stock BUT,
  • I found one "MegaMacs" who got this thing in stock, you better check.

I hope you will work out with this.

    Hello Wikki,

Thank you for trying to find solutions or at least a vendor that had one in stock. I have been trying to do the same for quite some time. I'd like to give you credit for finding a place that had it. Much to my disbelief and extensive searching I couldn't find one. The price seemed OK $20.00 but when I had the shipping estimated based on my zipcode the site came back with $10.00 and change, 1/2 the price of the product, for ground freight. I live in Syracuse, NY and I think that is an exhorbatant price for shipping from anywhere, let alone someone who is in the CST time zone. I was going to buy one as a spare, yes after a lot of work I finally came up with my own solution, but with that freight I will now have to think about it.

My solution was to have windows install an older backup of the driver. I went through their troubleshooter, which in 25 years of working with Microsoft OS's I have never had it work, when I found for the 4th time that windows could not recognize the USB device. I've never had their trouble shooter work for anything before but it gave me several choices. The first was to have them look on the net for the driver. This of course didn't work. Then it asked if I had a driver on a disk, it didn't come with one. Last was the choice to reinstall the previous version of the driver that windows had saved. I chose it and low and behold the problem was fixed. As I had guessed the driver had become corrupt somewhere along the line. The battery has now been working for hours so I'm sure it's back to normal.

I'm surprised that Kensington or anyone else I had asked for help including myself didn't think of this solution before. I am so happy to have my very dependable beautifully designed mouse back in action.

Thanks for trying and at least finding a new one somewhere on the face of the earth. I hope the one they carry works with windows as well as Mac's as it is a Mac site.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>- --> Synching Mouse or Keyboard with Wireless Optical Desktop trnsp.gif Question My mouse or keyboard doesn't work with my Wireless Optical Desktop (Model Number: 64373). What's wrong and how do I fix this problem? trnsp.gif Answer Your mouse or keyboard has lost its sychronization with the Wireless Optical Desktop, which can occur after changing the batteries, for example.

To synchronize your wireless device with its receiver:
  1. Move the device within three (3) feet of the receiver.
  2. Press the button on the receiver.
If the receiver has an LED, the light blinks.
  3. Within ten (10) seconds, press the button on the underside of your wireless device.
If the receiver has an LED, the light glows solidly when synchronization is successful.
Early production units of some wireless devices may require repeating the above instructions two or three times.

Timing, distance, and objects impeding the wireless signal may influence your success. While usually unnecessary, some customers have reported better results by:
  • Holding the wireless device very close, within three (3) inches of the receiver.
  • Entirely ignoring the receiver's light.
  • Simultaneously holding the buttons on both the receiver and the device for from ten (10) to twenty (20) seconds.
