Lens probably does not extend or retract because the sand got stuck in gear box. The lens can in about 50% of the cases be repaired without having to replace it by opening it and cleaning it out. Try to return to manufacturer first. If you're out of warranty, there are third party places that fix them such as camera lens repairs. If you want to do it yourself, there are also free camera repair guide websites that show you how to replace the lens, the replacement part is usually available on ebay. Opening an cleaning requires special equpiment, but you can just replace the whole lens, it's usually a $30 part.

It is quite likely that sand or some other particle got lodged in the lens mechanism. You can take it to a camera store that services cameras and have them clean it.

Maybe you got sand or salt water (a killer in any electronic device)? Best contact the experts; you may need parts replaced.

Lens error was at beach no sand but yet when turned on it says lens error

Anyone who has ever been near the beach knows that as soon as you are within 100ft of the sand you will feel sand in between your toes even with your sneakers and socks on. That's because sand is in the air and contaminates everything. Therefore, if you value your camera, mp3 player, radio, cellular phone PDA, or laptop computer, DO NOT TAKE IT anywhere near the beach. Solution: use an air compressor. Blow air & dust through the hose first. Use clean air to blow out extended lens area. Open and close lens and blow out several times. Firmly jolt the camera into the palm of your hand to dislodge the dirt particle. Use more air. You may notice sratches on the side of the lens cylinder that were created by the particles of sand. 99% pure isopropyl alcohol (91% if you're in a pinch is available at any drug store) can also be used on a Q tip and swabbed around the lens barrel cylinder. Make sure you use a few CLEAN Q tips on the lens. Now go buy a disposible camera and $10 mp3 player for the beach and leave the $200+ camera and IPOD at home or at the hotel room. Now you'll surely have a wonderful time at the beach.

Nikon Coolpix S550 Lens Error.. Need fix without spending

No, even if you could find a lens for free this is not an easy camera to replace the lens on. Even a qualified tech would take up to an hour to replace. Understand that today's cameras low cost makes replacing the camera a better option than repairing a camera who's value used is less than the repair cost.

Sounds like a broken gear, or a grain of sand stuck in a lens gear.

Lens error

The very smallest piece of sand will jam any digital camera lens. You should be extremely careful to never allow sand to get anywhere near any digital camera. The gears are very small, thus the smallest piece of debris will do a lot of damage. To remove all the sand in the gear train is a time consuming effort. It has to be completely taken apart to do it right. You will need a good magnifing lens as well. That may also affect the ccd and alignment. Sometimes it it worth it.

Lens Error

Hard choices here my friend. Sand in the lens system is bad news.
Jams up the close fitting bits. You basically have two choices. Get the camera repaired or throw it away and buy a new one.

Cost of repair will likely exceed the value of the camera. Perhaps not, but it's a gamble. Generally, just to get the extent of the damage evaluated and an estimate on repairs will cost you many dollars.

Alternatively, IF you are very handy, patient, observant, and have the correct tool, you MIGHT be able to dismantle things enough to do the cleaning yourself, but likely not to work. IF you got some salt contamination in the camera, which can be from just spray and related moisture, delicate electronic parts will be corroded and needing replacement.

Have fun ;' >
