Question about Poulan 42-Inch Steel Deck 17.5 HP Briggs & Stratton I/C Engine With 6 Speed

1 Answer

Smoking Briggs & Stratton

I have a 14.5 B&S OHV that is smoking heavily under load. I noted that a lot of oil is coming up through the crankcase breather tube. This just seemed to happen suddenly, so not sure what happened. Is it time for an overhaul? I have alot of miles on this one, but it still seems to run fine despite the smoke. I am replacing the breather valve, but do not think this will fix the problem.

I have good compression, 90-120lbs, so I do not think the rings are the problem. Plus the problem is not oil getting into the combustion chamber, but oil being blown back into the carb due to high crankcase pressure. Valves??

For all those who may be curious, I decided to tear into the engine to find out why the high crankcase pressure, and found out that the head gasket did indeed have a small breach between the combustion chamber and lifter chamber. This evidently was a pressure leak that manifested itself most when under load. I had placed a new breather on the engine to no avail.

Hello my name is Heath it will be my pleasure to assist you. Sounds like the rings are gone or wore down to nothing allowing the oil from the crankcase to get into the cylinder. It would need to be pulled apart rehoned put new rings in and a few new gaskets from taking it apart.

I had thought new rings, but I took a compression measurement, and it ranges from 90-120lbs. Now it does not sound like rings???

I have a Briggs stratton 14 hp ohv I/c quiet model 287707. I had a guy change the oil & he put 10W30 synthetic oil in it. Now it smokes white smoke really bad. I think he put the wrong oil in

There is a very real difference between 30W and 10W30 oil. Whether it's synthetic or not probably doesn't matter. If you have the literature that came with the mower, it will tell you the recommended engine oil.
If they put in the wrong oil, they should make it right. You shouldn't have to pay twice for an oil change. It could be burning oil, since 10W30 is a lower viscosity than 30W. I would have them change it again, and see if it stops smoking.

Briggs & Stratton Vertical OHV Engine 18 hp blowing white smoke engine run great but a lot of smoke and also have oil being spit out of the black hose that come from engine to the carb.

Check your oil.

If it is overfilled, milky, or smells like gas. Your going to need to change that ASAP. It sounds like the float has stuck in the past or is still sticking, and it has flooded the crankcase with gas, which has mixed with the oil. And because it is overfilled it comes through the breather hose into the carb. This also explains the smoke most probably because the oil is spewing in the carb through the breather and being burned.

Briggs and Stratton 22hp v twin OHV smoking badly

First thing to do is pull your dipstick and check for broken or missing O-ring also as you pull it, look to make certain that it was seated properly and all the way locked. If either condition exists, you will be leaking into the crankcase which will cause your symptoms
