Question about Sharp AF-S125MX Thru-Wall/Window Air Conditioner

Open Question

Not Getting Cool Room temperature

We have the Sharp AF-S125RX model and it's 12,000 btu's but it really doesn't get cold. We're using the auto cool and cool at the same time but it really doesn't get cool. It will blow cool air for like 5 to 7 minutes and then warm air blows out so it doesn't make the room temp. cold as it should. thanks.

SOURCE: Cool air when running; warm air when compressor is off.

It sounds as if warm outside air is being drawn back into the room when the unit is not actively cooling. Portable units depend on room air to carry the heat outside, & therefore will not work properly if the room is too airtight. Provide a makeup air passage by leaving the door slightly open, & see if this helps. Use a room thermometer to see if your desired temperature is being reached. Note that if the wind is strong & coming from the wrong direction, it may not be possible to prevent warm air drawback.

CAN I PUT THE EXHAUST TUBE INTO STORAGE CLOSET INSTEAD OF PUTTING IT IN A DOOR GOING TO THE OUTSIDE?

I think you are asking about a portable air conditioner, not a de-humidifier. With that assumed, the answer is, NO - that is not a good idea. The exhaust tube is for getting rid of the heat that you have pulled from the room you are cooling, plus the extra heat that the device itself creates. This is a considerable amount of heat, which will quickly heat up the closet and leak back into the room you are trying to cool. If the closet it tightly sealed, the unit will not be able to push the air through the tube, and the unit itself will overheat. The result will be that you will be buying electricity to actually RAISE the temperature of the room you are trying to cool.

Insufficient cooling with window air conditioner

The air conditioner should be big enough. It is hard to say whether or not the 46-47 degrees is right as you did not give a room temperature. The first thing to do before installing a used unit is to thoroughly clean it. Use your garden house to rinse both the evaporator and condenser coils. Also ensure the filter is clean. If the unit is still not cooling properly it likely needs a shot of refrigerant. Beyond cleaning the unit I would not recommend other do it yourself fixes.

Hello, I can assist you.

If the unit is supposed to turn off and it doesn't, it will be necessary to check several things.

  • First, is the unit cooling properly? See the section entitled "The air is cool but doesn't seem cold enough."

  • Next, is the temperature of the room adequately cool? If the room temperature is cold enough try setting the thermostat to a higher temperature. If the unit then seems to work properly leave the thermostat set to the higher temperature.

  • If the unit is cooling properly when it is turned on and the room is not cool enough the problem is probably that the unit is trying to cool an area that is too large for its capacity. Use the following chart to find the appropriate size air conditioner to use:

AREA TO BE COOLED / CAPACITY (BTU/HR)

100 to 150 square feet = 5,000

150 to 250 square feet = 6,000

250 to 300 square feet = 7,000

300 to 350 square feet = 8,000

350 to 400 square feet = 9,000

400 to 450 square feet = 10,000

450 to 550 square feet = 12,000

550 to 700 square feet = 14,000

700 to 1000 square feet = 18,000

If the room is heavily shaded, reduce needed capacity by 10%

If the room receives a lot of direct sun, increase needed capacity by 10%

Add 600 Btu/Hr for each person in the room if there are more than two people

If the unit is for a kitchen, increase the capacity by 4,000-6,000 Btu/Hr.

If the room size is too big for the air conditioner you have two possible choices. Either decrease the room size by shutting some doors or partitioning off an area of the room. Or, increase the BTU of the air conditioner for that room by installing a different air conditioner with a higher BTU rating.

Danby ALSO does not cool 3 days old

Take it back where you bought it. A 12,000 BTU unit should be more than enough for a 192 square foot room, so there is some problem with the unit.

Sharp Air Conditioner. Model # AF-S85NX. Does this A.C. fan cycle on & off in the auto cool mode or does remain on continuously. I need a small A.C. that cycles off and on with the compressor.

If you set you r AC to FAN mode the unit will not cool, it only runs in the indoor but the outdoor will off. If you set to AUTO the unit will cool but the indoor blower will automatically run slower when the room is cool or attain the room temp. setting. If you set it to COOL the fan speed is fix depending on your setting and it also operate in cool.

Cooling on and off

Behind the filter there should be a small metal tube that senses the temp. entering the unit sometime this is too close to the metal fins and sense the cold from the fins and not the air coming in. Make sure this is away from the fins and try a different temp. setting. And relocating the unit. These units tend to give off more heat that cooling because the hot air is returned to the inside of the room and not vented outside like window units. This is an  EdgeStar 12,000 BTU unit, correct?
