    Thanks Ginko,
I tried the laser lens cleaner, but no luck.
If it's a faulty lens head it may be that it would be uneconomical to have it repaired and I may have to buy a replacement DVD Recorder. Walraymond

Try to reset you LG recorder as below.
1. Remove any power supply from the recorder. Including take the power supply cable from the main Socket.
2. Leave it off for at less 20 min.

Restart again....

This sounds like either the lens is dirty and not allowing the disc to be read or the optics have failed. Open up the unit and clean the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. If that does not resolve the problem, try playing a music CD. If the CD works, I would suspect that the optics are bad. CDs require significantly less laser power to work.

Check that is not a dirty lens problem, start using a lens cleaner disk

If you cannot play commercial disks, but you can record your own DVDs
and play them, then it is a problem with region settings, set up DVD
for your country/region, if it is not this proceed on following:

Try also playing a cd, if it does not even play a music cd (it is supposed to), then it is probably a faulty or dirty dvd lens

Start using a Laser Lens Cleaner disk and solution, often this fix the problem. If it is not enough the dvd cover must be removed, power disconnected and lens cleaned directly with more solution, isopropyl alcool ans a soft cloth.
If this still does not work, the dvd lens head may be in need of replacement, at this point consider also recurring to a service center.
Let me know if you need more help.

If you do not mind jeopardising your dvd integrity you can unscrew cover and clean with a cloth and alcohol. If you decide to proceed in this way I can post cleaning procedure in a couple of hours
Check this old post of mine for more details on how to clean lens.

My LG DVD RECORDER, MODEL RH7500 won't play DVDs.

Check the model specifications for your device. Some players will only accept DVD-R and not DVD+R or not DVD+RW discs. I know it all seems the same, and it's very frustrating, but many companies restrict the type of discs they will allow. My player does +R but not -R. It should still be able to read DVD discs that you made yourself, but they will be of a different type.

Finalise disc

You need to put the disk back into the recorder, select the finalize function from the onscreen menu, and follow prompts. Do you have an owners manual for the unit?
