First make sure your usb cable or firewire cable connected to harddrive is working fine. Also make sure usb ports of computer is working fine.
If still not recognized then connect harddrive to weindows computer take backup of all data then open my computer and right click on your external drive then format it.
Then again tranfer data to harddrive.
Then check in mac.
If you don't need any data from harddrive then in mac follow below procedure and format it.
Use the Apple Disk utility software that comes with your Mac.
PARTITION your Mac as 1 Partition and while you are in that same
window, SELECT OPTIONS.
THIS IS THE KEY: There are 3 radio buttons in the popup window for
formatting options. The drive was preset as the bottom button PC
formatting and you have to chose the middle button which is for Mac.
Click apply and finish formatting your drive. Works perfectly.
One other thing, it is a good idea not to have any applications
running when you format the drive.
If your harddrive is not recgnize in mac and windows then your usb cable or harddrive has issue.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.
Hi Wendycc, Please follow the below steps: 1. Your hard disk draws power from the usb cable only for its operation. So using a long usb connecting cable may result in loss of power due to attenuation. So remove any extension usb cable, if used to connect your hard disk to your computer. 2. Try connecting your hard disk to any other computer and check if it is working fine. If working then there might be some problem with your mac. Try connecting using some other short length USB cable. 3. Avoid connecting via any USB hub or USB splitters. Directly connect your hard disk to your computer using a single short lenthed usb cable. 4. If connecting to desktop PC, then connect your harddisk directly at the backside USB ports and avoid using the front USB sockets. I hope this is useful to you let me know your comments Thanks
I use to have hooked up to a USB hub & thats when it started to be slow. It is now plugged directly to the computer and still it cant find the external Hard drive.
I had the computer on in "sleep mode" and the power went out in my building. Ever since then it hasn't been working. What do I do now??
