SOURCE: tiller wont run
if it has set up for longer than a few moths it is most likely a fuel issue. many times the diaphram on the carb will dry out and shrink or crack allowing air to seep through leaning the motor to the point to where it will stall after a couple seconds. spray some wd40 aorunfd the ouside body of the carb and tank were the carb attaches if applicable and restart if it runs a little longer you will need to replace the diaphram which is inexpensive to fix usually under $10.00 refer to a manual or somtimes you can go online to youtube and there are many videos on the subject. hope this helps... good uck!

Carberator is gummed up and will need to be removed and dismantled and soaked in solvent for an hour or two.

SOURCE: CRAFTSMAN TILLER
I have the same problem. In my case it is the belt that is screeching. It doesn't move (sometimes) when in gear and the pully spins against it and casues it to screech. eventually it will begin to smoke. I thought maybe the belt was streatched and needed replacing but I can't get it off. There is a bolt with a sleeve that holds the guard on. I can loosen it but can't get it out. I inherited this thing from my dad. I remember him having the same problems from the beginning. As a good rule of thumb - don't by anything with the Craftsman name on it - it usually a piece of junk (my experience)

Here is a link to a JC Penneys tiller that uses the same Briggs&Stratton engine 190402-1835-02 as my Sears 32-29978 8HP tiller.
