The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can’t flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won’t turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it’s bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it’s in the defrost mode.

If you have a defrost timer you can test it. It can be located under the fridge behind the kick panel on the front. Some are in the fridge with the controls at the top. You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer because that means the timer is not running. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

If you have an adaptive defrost control instead of a timer, replace it if the heater and thermostat test good. It is located in the fridge with the controls in some models and on the back in others.

Charles, I just looked at a haier fridge for a friend, but I find no temperature sensor on the defrost element. The element looks and feels okay, but I can't find a timer. This is a unit that has two doors side by side, and a door below. I have looked on the web for a schamatic, buut I have had no luck. The model no. is 'prcs25edaw', any suggestions? Gail

Freezer side not cold enough, similar temperature as Refrigerator side

It could be many things. My first guess would be the defrost. The coil that gets cold in your freezer builds ice on it and the only way to get the ice off is to run a heater near the coil long enough for the ice to melt. All freezers have something built in to defrost and domestic are typically just an electric heater on a timer. When your freezer stops working again, you may want to pull open the panel of your freezer and see if your coil (a heat exchanger that probably looks a lot like your car radiator) is covered in ice. If it is, it could be the timer or the actual heater that is bad.

Why ice is forming in some items kept inside at the back of the refrigerator including the vegetable tray.

Ice at the back of refrigerator section is usually due to a fan there that has become stuck, little fan like 2 1/2" or so, the fan circulates cold from the freezer into the refrigerator. If that cold air is not moved through than it will form ice there from moisture in the air of the refrigerator section. I have had that problem a couple times, could be from something pushed against back wall and got n the way of fan blades causing fan to stop.

Ice forms on all the wireing behind the back wall in the freezer compartment and then the freezer doesn't stay cold enough.

Check the seal strip around the freezer door and if it's tight enough to give resistance to a 2 inch strip of paper all the way around, check the back of the unit. Sometimes, mice will climb up the tubes and eat a hole through the insulation, into the freezer. This allows room air to constantly enter the freezer, along with the humidity.

All of a sudden, my refrigerator doesn't keep anything cold like it used to but the freezer still works. We have cleaned underneath but it still doesn't keep anything cold. What could be the problem?

Look for signs of frost on the back side. You probably have a defrost problem of it could be a drain problem.
Your ice box cold air originates in the freezer. A fan pushes down the cold air into the fresh food section. If their are too many items in the freezer the air can be blocked to the fresh food section. If the drain stops up sometimes a puddle forms a slab of ice between the freezer and the bottom. Water on floor under unit & ice bottom of freezer

By going online, saw several posts re this problem. In short, the water drain was clogged and there was also a problem with the defrost timer. Service man blew out the drain line with compressed air and installed a new timer. Voila! Problem fixed. Interestingly, the serviceman found a wad of what looked like putty, but was sticky like gum in the drain area. He said he had never encountered anything similar.

Water always inside refrigerator sometimes ice forms

Sounds like you might have a condensation problem. Is the fan in your freezer working? If not it's not circulating the cold air. If it is you might have frost on the lower rear wall of your freezer meaning its not defrosting like it should and restricting your air flow. Last but not least you have a damper door in the upper left corner of your fridge that allows the cold air from your freezer into the fridge to cool it, that might not be opening up. Any one of these things would cause your water problem and a warm fridge section

Warm fridge, cold freezer

If frost in back wall of freezer it's not defrosting. This will keep cold air from getting to refig,. section. It may require a main board replacement. Or a defrost control replacement.
