Question about HP DesignJet 450c InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Upon turning on the plotter, with no paper installed, the Cartridge and Data lights are on solid. When I push cancel those 2 lights go out and the media light flashes. I again push cancel and the media light goes out and the load media light comes on solid. Typically the load media light flashes in order to draw paper into the plotter. With the load media light solid, the paper will not load. Any suggestions?

Remove the top cover and stick some paper into the switch on the left side of the menu to simulate the cover closed. Now power on the plotter and watch what happens. The carriage assembly should move all the way to the right and then back to the left. If will then move to the right again and then back to the left and start to find the mark encoder which is a white piece on the left end of the paper platen. You should see the red light come on underneath on the right side of the carriage assembly as it tries to read the mark encoder. Does the red light come on? If not I really do not see how the printer can come to load media unless you get all three lights on the right and then you hit cancel and then it say load media. That sensor does have a habit of picking up a lot of black ink. If the plotter is old and has been used a lot, it is possible the sensor is clogged with ink. The best way to clean it is to remove the left side cover and remove the service station. You will then have access to that sensor without having to remove the carriage assembly from the plotter. The other thing you will want to do is clean the encoder strip with a damp lint free cloth

Micahel, I have cleaned the encoder strip and the sensor and the problem is unchanged. Prior to cleaning the sensor the red light was visible but I did remove a lot of black ink from the bottom of the sensor. The description of my problem shown above was accurate first thing this morning but for the last several trial start-ups the Cartridge and Data lights still come on solid and upon pushing cancel they go out and then media light flashes. The difference is that when I push cancel again now, the media light goes out but the ready light is flashing as though it were receiving a job. Pushing cancel does not stop this and of course the paper will not load. This change came even before I perfromed the cleaning that you recommended. Any other suggestions?

Mike, I started to mention that several times this morning when the load media light was on solid I depressed the blue load button and the paper drew in. The align media light flashed and I lowered the blue handle, aligned the media, raised the lever and the excess paper was cut off as usual but the plotter proceeded to spit out the roll and the media light came on solid. Thought this may also be helpful info.

I bought a used HP Design Jet 450 C...But its showing the cartridge and data solid orange light and ready light is constantly green. I brought a new black cartridge, the printer takes in the paper and...

I think the problem is not the computer. You shoud check the plotter by running the test print without the computer. When plotter's power is on, press Setup and Cancel keys simultaneously. If it does not print, then the plotter need repair.
According to your descriptions, there is System Error Code shown on your control panel. when the lights on for Ready+Cartridges+Data (DKL), it may have 9 possible causes referred by Service Manual page 2-7. You can check all these 9 items to see which one causes the problem.

Problem with plotter

That sounds like a carrage movment problem. When you load paper the carrage moves from the RHS very quickly. If your carrage is not properly lubricated you will get that fault. Before going further you must switch off and open the cover. Look along the length of the belt (just below on the aluminum) if there ere lots of reddish pieces and a dust like substance it means that your carrage belt will need replacing. If the belt is ok, then move the head to the middle of the machine by hand and apply a drop of thin oil (sewing machine) to either side of the carrage on the bar. Move the head slowly left and right to lubricate the bar. It then should be ok.
Good luck
Dave

Problem with plotter

Are the lights flashing? If they are flashing it is a system error, if they are on steady it is a recoverable error. When you push cancel is the media light the only one or is align media or ready on as well?

ERROR LIGHTS

Is your ready light on as well? If so this may indicate that the "mark encoder" is not detected. The mark encoder is the white plastic piece on the left end of the large black roller that the paper feeds around. If the encoder is very dirty, then cleaning may help.If not, carriage usually has to be replacved, I have heard of some that paint over the mark encoder with white out before replacing the carriage. Don't think I would try it but....Hope this helps.

Pull out the toner cartridge. Carefully put your fingers into the opening just beyond the chrome roller. A little to the left of center you will fell/see a small black plastic finger which sticks up. It should be loose - push it forward and it springs forward, release it and it returns to the original position. If your paper jam catches this finger it can become jammed and will feel rigid. Put light pressure on it either pushing to the back or pulling forward until it becomes free again. Replace the toner cartridge, close the cover and your red light should go out.

It worked for me - hope it helps someone else.
