This version of 'XPress Preferences is incompatible with this version of QuarkXPress [86] I have been using QuarkXPress 7 on a PC and have just started getting the above error message when I try to start the program. Help!

    Yes Im getting thew same error message and have tried cleaning the register and reinstalling but it will still not start up the program. If you have a solution please contact me at amaya.al@gmail.com

delete file : xpress preferences.

    Deleting the file C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Quark\QuarkXPress 8\xpress preferences.prf did the trick thanks!!!! This is a profile issue, when i was logged into the system as myself I did not receive the error, very frustrating, reinstalled twice!

You have Vista? I have today the same message. I was simply in C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Quark\
Here, you will normally find the file "XPressPreferences"
Remove it and it will rework fine.

You have probably Quark 7 and Quark 8...

Hi everyone Im using QX 8.02 and i have the same problem here and I did try to enter the
c:\documents & settings\user\aplication data\quark\quarkxpres.7
But it doesnt exist.

Can someone help me plzz i need it quickly plzz :S

The application preferences file is damaged. Please remove it and re-launch QuarkExpress [297] Where is the preferences file located? (Version 9, Windows 7)


The preferences file will be in the User\AppData folder.
C:\Users\ your user name\AppData\ Local\Quark\QuarkXPress 7 is the location in Vista with version 7 and it should have a similar location in Windows 7.

C:\Users\ your user name\AppData\ Local\Quark\QuarkXPress 9 is likely. (AppData has 3 folders - Local, Local Low and Roaming.)

You should not delete the folder. Instead rename it. Right click on the folder and select Rename. Then name it
old_QuarkXPress 9.

This could be a hidden file. If you click Start and then enter Show hidden folders. Then put the bullet on Show hidden files, folders and drives. Then click Apply and OK.

If moving the AppData location to another folder doesn't solve the problem, check if there is a Preferences file in the Program Files folder (
C:\ Program Files\ Quark\ QuarkXPress 7.x for the old version.) If the new version is built for the 64-bit OS, it might be in the x64 Program File folder. Again rename the file if it is in that directory.

Error 1720. Trying to install Quark 6.1 on Windows 7


I definitively solved this problem. Follow these steps:
1) Install first Quark Xpress 6.1 on a Windows XP PC.
2) Copy the entire directory of installed files (Normally c:\program files\quark) on a pen drive.
3) Install Quark Xpress 6.1 on your Windows 7 PC until the installation stops with 1720 error.
4) Abort the installations, then copy the Quark directory stored on your pendrive in c:\programs x 86 directory overwriting the existing one.

This way Xpress 6.1 works perfectly on a Windows 7 PC. Guaranteed!

Quark keeps quitting


I take it you mean it quits on startup, if so this is what I would suggest.

What you could do is go to users folder then open up the folder of whoever is the active user (generally this user folder icon is a house icon) then open the library folder then the preferences folder and then quark folder then QuarkXPress 6.0 folder.

In this folder there is a file called "XPress Preferences.prf" move it to the trash (Do not empty the trash if it does not work you can replace the file back into the preference folder) and then start up Quark, it should rebuild the file.

Please note your preferences will be back to default and you will need to reset them.

I would also suggest that you go to www.quark.com then support and update your version of quark to the most up to date version from 6.0 possibly up to 6.1 or 6.52.

After using my quarkxpress 7.1 everyday for 5 years, this morning it won't launch. I just get the logo screen with whirling color disk. Can you help me resolve this?


It sounds like your preferences file has corrupted.

Quark won't open. I have shut down, completed repair permissions . . . no luck. Starts to load and immediately quits. This started after doing an update on Microsoft Office. What can I do? I am using Quark...


This is for Quark on a Mac. Quark not responding- I have reloaded and reinstalled software. I have run norton antivirus and mac has no viruses. I have removed all files and backed up everything so my Imac is now clean.


Please Navigate to HDD>>Users>>Home User>>Library>>Preferences>>Quark>>QuarkXPress 7.x folder and delete all the files present in that folder.

Also check if there is any Preferences folder under HDD>>Applications>>QuarkXPress 7.x folder, if yes then delete that folder as well.

Now launch QuarkXPress and check the results.

Quark 7 wont open


Just Navigate to HDD>>Appliocations>>QuarkXPress 7 folder and create a folder by the name Preferences with P in upper case and then try to launch QuarkXPress.
