What does it mean when the instructions say to Cut On Fold. I am new to sewing.

It usually means that the pattern maker is saving paper by giving you only 1/2 of the pattern piece--the center of the pattern is laid on the fabric fold. You cut out only 1/2 of the pattern but when you unfold the fabric, you get a full piece because it is a mirror image of the other half (like the back of a shirt). The fabric is folded so the selvedges match. The pattern's center back is placed on the fabric fold. Essentially, after you've cut out the pattern and unfold the fabric, you will have the whole back.

The lay-out pattern will show those pieces placed on the fold before they are cut out.

Simplicity pattern 1291 view F. Instructions vague, ready to start sewing it together. Several pieces were cut on fold no indication if I keep them whole, my fleece does not march up with the size.

If the pattern instructs you to place the pattern on the fold, the folded fabric should be kept whole (do NOT cut the fold!).

You can probably contact Simplicity with your questions.

How to lay out pattern

Your pattern should have directions as to how to place the pattern pieces on your material. Be sure that you put the pattern exactly like it says - until you get proficient, then you can play:) Check that you have put the pieces that go on the fold are on the fold and that the pattern goes only in the direction that the pieces show, especially if the material has a 1 way design, like chickens, flowers, cats, etc. Otherwise one side will be right side up and the other will be upside down. Also, check that you are using the proper diagram for the size of material you are using. If you are making a jacket or something with buttons, it is a good idea to put a smaller button on the inside of the material and sew that along with the real button. That would be, on the inside of the material that is against the body, a small button. The material, then the outside button. This keeps the thread from tearing the material and the button will stay on longer. If you are new at sewing, don't get frustrated and give up if you run into trouble. It's fun and if you can sew a straight line, you can make pillows, cat/dog beds, toys, etc. Check out these sites for help. Good luck and happy sewing.

Do I have to have the cutting blades on the machine to serge material? Also, what's rolled hem and whats overlock?

No you do not need the cutting blade to serge but you shouldn't have to remove the blade it you should be able to push the knob at base of blade inward or pull it outward to turn blade downward out of the way.

Trimed material keeps curling up into the

perhaps you are trying to cut off too much material, rather than having the material on the edge, so the blade just neatens it up. Also, the blade may be blunt

Help, Janome Ezy Lock 304D Overlocker!

Although the tension units on your machine are of a different configuration, always thread from the right spool first and then each one to the left.........ONLY in that sequence !

d5f0050.jpg
now take a look at this sewusa site for a better view of the actual routine through the thread guides.........as I say, the tension units are different, but the sequence is the same, just use the image from above to see which one is next........this chart, just as the one on the fold down cover of your machine need to be followed one thread at a time from R to L

If you want any more help with this, just post back here, or, drop a line through the "Contact Us" page at www.bargainbox.com.au
