Hello,

  • Red to the thermostat RH or thermostat RC terminal with a jumper wire between thermostat RH and thermostat RC. Or Red to the thermostat R terminal which is shared with both the heating and cooling. It has an internal jumper built in to the sub-base. The red wire is the source hot wire from the transformer. All other wires, except the common wire, controls a specific relay or contactor that energizes the fan, heating, or cooling depending on the selection. The following is the common wiring colors.
  • Green to the thermostat G terminal. This is the color that controls the fan or the relay that control of the blower.
  • Yellow to the thermostat Y terminal. This is for control of the air conditioning.
Take care.

Why won't thermostat turn on after I changed the batteries?

I think you may have the model # incorrect, However if you have a thermostat as in the type that are hand held, polarity of the batteries is the 1st thing I would check, then test them for proper voltage, corrosion will often interrupt that small of a voltage, clean the terminals and test it .

A wall mounted like a central HVAC system typically will not require batteries to operate, this is for memory and they will work fine even if no batteries are installed, however there are battery powered stats too, meaning non parasitic type that not powered by the transformer in the air handler.
I will include a basic drawing of a residential HVAC thermostat to show you how the 24 volts powers most thermostats.

What affect does increasing or decreasing the "span" setting have on the Hunter 40135 thermostat

I once had a weird recycling problem with my furnace and I simply cut off the power to it for a few minutes, plugged it back in and the issue was fixed. I know that's not much help but worth a try if you didn't think of it.

How do i get my carrier thermostat # R ,Y/Y2. G , C , W/W1 into a Hunter thermostat model 44360?

First off hunter is a very problematic brand I recommend taking it back and get honeywell or white rodger you will thank me in the long run trust me. As far as the wiring goes R terminal which is typically red which is 24v power connect to R on t- stat hook Y which is usually Yellow to Y terminal G is green W is white,
R= power 24 V
Y= cooling
W= heat
G= fan
C= common only used if t-stat does not require batteries.
If this help please rate me and do a testimonial.

Is this a heat pump? Look in the thermostat. You should have something like the following.
Red wire to R terminal
Green wire to G terminal
Yellow wire to Y terminal
White wire to W or W1
Blue or Orange wire to the O or B terminal
Brown wire to C terminal.

Let me know what you have in the thermostat. The wire colors are not always the same.

Central air conditioner will not turn on at all.

I understand this to be a heat pump. Check your thermostat settings, and the filters. And make sure a breaker isn't tripped.

With the jumper inplace does the compressor start? What about without? Unless you have more than one transformer you should leavethe jumper.

If you have an electronic thermostat, they can short out, leaving the compressor running. Also, the big relay that runs the compressor can get its contacts welded together. See if the contacts are stuck closed.
