I set something up to print and it only prints a half a page

Can you save your document to PDF and try to print it again? Sometimes there is 'corrupt' postscript information in your file, and when you make a PDF first, it will be solved. If you do not want to make a PDF first, try to print your document page by page. It also could be a memory problem. That sometimes will be solved by shutting down your printer, wait a minute than switch it on again. So, you can try these three things:
1: Shut down your printer, wait a minute switch it on again, than try to print your document
2: Print your document page by page
3: Make a pdf of your document first, than print the pdf
Succes!

Cannot print pdf

Can you printer other kinds of documents aside of PDF?
Maybe you have something in the PDF that is causing an issue with the printer. Will the PDFs print on you mom's older printer?

Type of document usually doesn't have any bearing.

An incorrect driver perhaps. Go to Canon's website and locate the latest driver and any updates for your model.

I have a Canon PIXMA MP780. It won't print except

If you can print the nozzle test then that proves most of the electronics, it could be the driver is screwed.
Since you can get something out that is intelligent e.g. the larger font lettering then it is processing the file sent to it.
By that I mean rasterising it, converting it to dots of ink, so it can print onto the page as the heads moves back and forth.
Why not try another computer and connect your printer to that one, or try a different file, or even send it a file you've printed successfully in the past before you started to have this problem.
