Question about Xerox Phaser 8550DP Printer

8550DP Maintenance Kit

Printer suddenly gave the message MAINTENANCE KIT MISSING. I replaced it with a new one, and it still says MISSING, not low.

Posted by on

  • JoeStory Apr 18, 2008

The original message was not REPLACE MAINTENANCE KIT. It was MAINTENANCE KIT MISSING.

Installing a new, identical maintenance kit did not change the message. It still shows MISSING, indicting to me that it is not being properly sensed.

Is this a bad switch or sensor somewhere?

Also, is there a source for repair instructions and parts?

Thanks for your interest and support.

i replaced the maintenance kit as well as the toner this morning and when it was turned back on to begin printing, the replace maintenance kit is still appearing.

First of all make sure it is the right kit. The part numbers for teh 8550 and 2424 are very close, one ends in 675 the other in 657, so they have been known to be mixed up.
then here is the documentation..

Problem:
The machine displays the Replace Maintenance Kit after the Maintenance Kit has been replaced.
Cause:
There may two causes for this issue.

  1. The machine does not recognize that the Maintenance Kit was removed. This would likely be caused by a defective Drum Maintenance Pivot Plate.
  2. The machine corrupts the CRUM on the new Maintenance Kit. This may be caused by a defective Drum Maintenance Pivot Plate or IO Board.
Solution: 8550DP Maintenance Kit - thumbsup.gif Fixed! thumbsdn.gif Did not fix.
  1. While the Replace Maintenance Kit message is displayed, remove the Maintenance Kit. If the displayed message does not change to "Maintenance Kit Missing," replace the Drum Maintenance Pivot Plate and install a new Maintenance Kit.
  2. While the Replace Maintenance Kit message is displayed, remove the Maintenance Kit. If the displayed message changes to "Maintenance Kit Missing," replace the IO Board and then install a different NEW Maintenance Kit. If the problem persists, replace the Drum Maintenance Pivot Plate and install a different NEW Maintenance Kit.

there are 2 parts which are recommended to replace. One it he pivot plate, which raises the kit up and down, it has the contacts on it.The other is the Input output, IO board it connects to.

The maintenance kit itself does not have a switch per se. It has contacts on the front, toward the back of the kit and on the disc shaped counter on the kit.

what happens is the contact is poor, or the board that it connects to is bad.

What you can do is remove the kit, and look in the opening with a flashlight to see if there is anything obviously broken, and also look to see if any ink has spilled into the kit area keeping it from going into the machine properly.

Also remove the white tray to the right and look in there, there is a black sensor at the back, look for the presence of ink in it also.

With the suddeness of the problem, makes me think that the board failed.
But I would look inside and see if you can see a bent contact or ink in the area.

It will most likely require the replacement of the kit along with the board.

Where are you? I can look up a local service provider for you to call if you need onsite assistance. Xerox's number directly is 1-800-835-6100 for that product? How long have you had the printer, is it possible you have warranty remaining?

Let me know what you find inspecting the area inside of the maintenance kit.

    Here is the documentation .

    TRY FIRST (Solutions without parts):

    1. The maintenance kit is missing. Have the customer install a maintenance kit 2. Maintenance kit is missing the counter. Inspect the maintenance kit for the round counter and have the kit replaced if it's missing. 3. Check the spring contacts for the counter. There should be one contact on the face of the round counter and one on the edge.

    TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS AND HINTS:

The sensor and flag for the waste bin are not usually defective. Typically this problem is the sensor flag is stuck or jammed and is not actuating properly. Remove and reseat the sensor flag and verify proper toggle operation.

I sort of understated the waste tray sensor at the back of the white tray, I have seen ink get into those more then once and cause problems.

HOW I WILL GO IN SERVICE MODE OF A PRINTER

Clearing the Maintenance Count and Service Message: HP LaserJets servicepin.jpg
If the display panel on your HP LaserJet reads "Perform Printer Maintenance", "Perform User Maintenance", "Maintenance Kit Low", "Maintenance Kit Very Low", or anything along those lines it means your printer needs a preventative maintenance kit, which includes a fuser and various rollers. Once you have installed the maintenance kit the message will only go away if you clear the maintenance count.

What do I do with the screen saying Maintenance?

Maintenance message means that you will need to order a maintenance kit for that printer. In a maintenance kit usually comes a new fuser core, transfer roller, and feed tires.

The fuser core is used to heat up the ink and permanently affix it to the paper before it comes out on the top tray.

If the printer still prints fine, and depending on how much printing you actually do on this, you may be able to get away with not needing to replace the maintenance kit for a couple more weeks.

Xerox 8560 displays replace incorrect maintenance kit

Was this a new maintenance kit? If it was new, try putting the old one back in, if it reports the same message, the pivot plate will more than likely need replacing. If it displays the original message i.e, replace maintenance kit, then the fault is with the new maintenance kit. Do check you have been sent the correct maintenance kit for your machine, part number should be 108R00675 for standard and 108R00676 for the extended Phaser 8560 printer and Phaser 8560MFP kit.
If it is the original maintenance kit and the error just appeared, as I am assuming you will have already tried re-seating it, the problem is likely to be the pivot plate again.
Hope this helps.

Where is the maintenance kit on hplaserjet 4345mfp

After printing 215,000 pages, the MFP alerts you to order a maintenance kit. The message can be
temporarily cleared for approximately 10,000 pages by using the CLEAR MAINTENANCE
MESSAGE
item on the RESETS submenu. When the page count reaches 225,000, you can no
longer clear the message and you must install the maintenance kit. To check the number of pages
that the MFP has printed since new maintenance-kit components were installed, print either a
configuration page or a supplies-status page
the maintenance kit is Fusing element , pickup rolls for all trays, and transfer corona
To reset the maintenance-kit counter
1
Turn the MFP off and then on.
2 When the memory count appears on the control-panel display, press and hold 6 until all three
LEDs flash once and then stay on. (This might take up to 20 seconds.)
3 Release 6 and then press 3.
4 Press 6 to select NEW MAINTENANCE KIT.
5 The MFP completes its initialization sequence. The maintenance-kit counter is automatically reset.

Xerox Phaser 8550 Maintenace Kit is stuck in the

If you remove the right side cover, you can operate the process drive gearbox with a straight-blade screwdriver on the end of the shaft (bottom of printer right in front of maintenance kit). This is the end of the drum maintenance camshaft. Rotate clockwise slowly. It's possible that the cams have cracked and rotated on the shaft. This is the weak point on these printers. If so, they may not be in sync. Good luck.

80 scheduled maintenance

This issue is just like changing your oil or the timing belt on your car. If you don't fix it correctly it leads to other problems. So, be warned. :+)

Here's what the Lexmark KB says:

On the Lexmark T520/522 series printers, we recommend that the maintenance kit be replaced after every 250,000 pages. If possible, an authorized service technician should replace the maintenance kit parts on these printers.

On the Lexmark T620/622 series printers, we recommend that the maintenance kit be replaced after every 300,000 pages. The maintenance kit parts for these printers are customer-installable, but some dismantling of the rear area of the printer is involved.

Note: The maintenance kit may need to be replaced more often if the customer is running heavy media (like card stock or labels) through the printer.
It is possible to clear the maintenance error message without replacing the kit. The printer will still operate, but some print quality problems may arise. However, this is not recommended as the message serves as a reminder that maintenance is due. If the printer is under warranty, the customer has to purchase the maintenance kit and have it replaced in order to keep the warranty active, although the on-site replacement itself may be covered under the warranty.
The parts that make up the maintenance kits are:
A fuser unit
A transfer roller
A charge roller
To find the part number of the maintenance kit needed for your printer, see Printers / Maintenance kits.
Clearing the maintenance message
To clear the message, you will need to go into the printer's configuration mode. Do the following:
  1. Press and hold the SELECT and the RETURN buttons as you power the printer on.
  2. Hold the buttons for six to eight seconds after turning on the power, then release them. (If you receive the maintenance message, press the Go or the Select button to continue past it.)
  3. Now, press the right Menu arrow until you see RESET MAINT CNT.
  4. Select this. You may need to press the Select button again. The printer display should briefly flash SAVED.
  5. Power the printer off and then back on in the normal way. The printer should now power up normally.
  6. If it does not and the error returns, repeat the above procedure.

We have a Phaser 8560 Printer and we are getting the message "maintenance kit low" message. What does this mean and how do we fix it?

This will require servicing:
The maintenance kit contains a maintenance roller that keeps the surface of the Imaging Drum clean and oiled.
NOTE: Order a new maintenance kit when the Display Screen displays a message that the maintenance kit is low. Replace the kit when the Display Screen prompts you to replace the maintenance kit. Both a Standard Maintenance Kit and an Extended Maintenance Kit are available for the Phaser 8550 and 8560; however, only a Standard Maintenance Kit is available for the Phaser 8500. An Extended Maintenance Kit will not be functional with the Phaser 8500.

WARNING: The printer's interior may be hot! Do not touch the hot surfaces.

Once you have the part: instructions:
  1. Open the door on the right side of the printer.
  2. Grasp the maintenance kit (labeled A) from the maintenance kit slot and pull the kit completely out of the printer.
  3. Insert a new maintenance kit and push the kit completely into the maintenance kit slot. Follow the illustrated instructions included with the maintenance kit for full installation and disposal information.
  4. Close the door.
This will be on the right side of the printer.
This will need to be replace every 10,000 sheets of paper.

  1. Close the door.
