Common problem especially with new users who are used to fixed spool casting, when casting with a multiplier you should keep your thumb over the drum so you can slow down the drum as your cast slows to fall in the water, if you had a drag washer you wouldnt be able to cast, you will get the hang of it with practice, but even with 30 odd years of use i still ocaisionaly get a nest.

Thread bunching up on bottom of fabric

Remove the top thread from your machine (NOTE: ALWAYS clip the thread next to the spool, lift the presser foot, and gently pull the top thread down from top to bottom!!! This helps reduce the chances of breaking something by pulling the thread upwards!)

ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the top thread from beginning. Verify the thread path is correct and start out with the thread tension set at the midway point (and then tweak the top thread tension through testing).

FWIW, if the thread problem appears under the fabric, it is generally a top thread issue. If the thread problem appears on the top of the fabric, it is generally a bobbin thread issue.

Birds nest

Check the tension on both the upper and lower threads is similar. It sounds like the thread on the lower spool is under tensioned. On most machines the tension is increased by a small screw on the spool.

Bobbin thread is gathering up under Neath

Sounds like birds nest or thread nests. HINT: When threading the top thread, ALWAYS have the presser foot in the RAISED position.

I have a 9020 singer sewing machine I bought without a manual. I can't seem to sew without looping the thread under it. Almost in knots.

Are you saying the upper thread is knotting under the fabric as it stitches? This is bird nesting or thread nesting and is generally caused by mis-threading, the thread not being seated in the tension disk, or the upper tension too loose.

When threading the upper thread, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot. Verify that the machine is threaded correctly. If one guide is missed, the stitching will go haywire. Start out with the upper tension set around the midway point and then tweak it through test stitching.

New singer plus one.....constantly stopping with message top thread broken (which it is not) but there is a nest of thread from the spool underneath...have rethreaded from spool and bobbin # of times

bird nesting of the bobbin thread is a result of the needle thread tension not tight enough
increase that tension up and the message may be eliminated

bunching under the material is bird nesting is a result of loose needle thread tension thread the machine up to the point of threading the needle
pull on the thread and you should have a reasonable resistance to pulling the thread
adjust the tension until you get that then thread the needle
while you may be using the tension settings if there is a problem in the tension plates area , the tension will not get high enough regardless of the indicated setting
bobbin tension can be reasonably loose
correct tension is when both threads meet at the center of the materials being sewn
