Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a Kitchenaid Superba side by side model #KSCS25INSS00. The ice maker makes a try of ice about once or twice per week. The ice tray is always full of water so it does not appear to be a water flow issue. However, it does not dispense the cubes. All of a sudden we will hear it dump a tray and then refill. A few days later it will dump the ice tray again. It takes about 1 month to fill the ice bucket. I checked for a frozen water line and checked the rubber gaskets under the solenoid. Everything appears to be operational and still we only get ice every few days.

Since there's always water in the tray, you either have warm air getting in or your freezer is set to low or your low on refrigerant.

I noticed about an hour ago that the freezer was set to 12 degrees. I actually set it colder. It is now at 6 dgrees. As far as the warm air issue is concerned, wouldn't I see icing if that was the issue?

  • jonesspammai Jul 06, 2010

I felt I needed to clarify my statement a little. When I sat "set to low" I meant set to warm. The warm air could be just too much acitivity, people get thing in and out of the freezer and the ice finally forms when the door stays closed long enough.

  • jonesspammai Jul 06, 2010

Do you have a thermometer so you can check the actual temp? Another possibility, check the dump switch arm to be sure it's operating correctly.

  • jrhodes398 Jul 06, 2010

I am pretty sure that frequency of use is not an issue. We just returned home from a three week vacation and the ice maker bin was about 1/2 full. Does 6 degrees sound about correct for the temp setting? The manufacturer actually suggest the freezer temp be set to zero degrees.

  • jrhodes398 Jul 06, 2010

I will make sure to check the temp manually. How do I check the arms functinality?

  • jonesspammai Jul 06, 2010

Our last couple messages seem to have crossed. Let me see if I have this right, the ice is freezing it's just not dumping or is the ice partially freezing and dumping when it finally freezes completely?

  • jrhodes398 Jul 06, 2010

There is always frozen ice cubes in the tray but they only dump once or twice per week. Within 30 minutes of dumping the tray is full a frozen again.

  • jonesspammai Jul 06, 2010

Are messages are definately crossing in transit. To check the arm, lift the arm away from the ice maker and up into the off position. It should move freely but should feel solidly mounted. The arm should rotate as I desribed above when the ice maker dumps it ice, any thing that stops the arm from moving freely causes the ice maker to register that the ice bucket is full. If the arm has any abnormal bends or anything causing not to move freely could be causing it to not settle completely into the ready position.

  • jonesspammai Jul 06, 2010

Please forgive my terrible typing I broke my wirst 6 weeks ago, makes typing rather hard.

  • jrhodes398 Jul 06, 2010

Okay! I thought that was what you were referring to. This model of ice maker does not have an arm. It has an infrared light that verifies if the ice bucket is full or not.

  • jonesspammai Jul 06, 2010

There are only two real possibilities then. Either the arm is not working properly or the thermoswitch that determines if the ice is frozen or not is not working correctly. Try gently pushing the arm against the ice maker and wiggle the switch a little, you want to see if you can cause the ice maker to dump it's ice.

Next time you hear it dump ice look to see if the arm is moving freely.

  • jonesspammai Jul 06, 2010

There must be something wrong with the server, I just got your message about your vacation and the manufactures suggested setting. If the manufacture is suggesting zero it's highly probable that the problem is the thermal switch is just not registering that the ice is frozen. I would recommend setting it to zero and see how it does over the next 24 hours.

  • jrhodes398 Jul 06, 2010

The ice maker made its token tray of ice last night. It appears that nothing has changed with it's functionality.

  • jonesspammai Jul 06, 2010

According to the manufacture it will take a full 24 hours for the ice maker to start making ice on a regular basis after the freezer has reached it's recommended temperature. Let it have it's full 24 hours then if it doesn't start working you'll need to call kitchenaide for service, their number is 1(800) 422-1230. The problem as far as I can tell has to be either in the ice bucket IR sensor or the thermo switch. If you call Kitchenaide you'll need your serial number as well as the model number before they will help you. They have an automated system to collect information, if you don't want to enter information just keep hitting Zero. Expect at least a 10 minute hold time.

Kitchenaid superba ice maker not making ice

Put some water in the tray. Let it freeze and once frozen will the ice then empty into the ice bin? If yes then the problem is possibly one side of the water control valve is defective. This is not the correct water control valve for your model number. HERE You need to provide the correct model number first.
What is the model number? I am here should you need me, Thanks John Tripp Appliance 911

KitchenAid 25in KSRJ25CNST00 icemaker trouble. The LED light on side of freezer is blinking twice with a delay and repeats same sequence. No ice is making. Any suggestions on what to look for?

Try the reset button on the control panel. If that doesn't work, then try unpluging the refrigerator.
Also, make sure that ice tray shut off arm isn't in the up position. It should be in the unlock position one notch below the off position. This arm is used by the refrigerator from over filling the ice cube holding tray. Once the ice fills the tray. The ice in the bend will push up on the arm which
initiate the ice maker to stop making ice. As soon as you start using the ice in the bend and the arm falls below the off position. The ice maker will start making ice. GB....stewbison

MY Kitchenaid model KSCS25INSS00 refrig ice maker is only producing crushed ice...no cubes...

There a button on the control panel label "cube ice" if you push this it will remove a gate up in the front of the ice make. If it not working. Remove the ice tray and you will see long rod on the ice tray. Move the rod back and forth afew time. Also, on the back wall behind the ice tray is a small latch, make sure that this latch is free to move. There could be ice on it remove the ice. Then reinstall the tray. GB....stewbison

Ice maker not producing ice. Tried everything in the Troubleshooting section of Users Manual. Replaced water filter. The front water dispenser is working.

the most likely thing would be a bad water valve.try to reset the ice maker and watch to see if the tray fills up the fill tube could also be blocked with frozen water.the last thing is simply a bad ice maker.

First off is the water filter bad and or do you have one...if not and it is good...then you have pretty much diagnosed the problem correctly...as you said the old Ice maker gears turn and when they make a complete revolution they engage a trigger which signals the water solenoid to dispense water to the ice maker...another test is to fill the ice maker manually and see if it freezes (test the temp of the freezer...if it is not cold enough the ice maker will not work)...if ice is made (generally under 4 hours ) and it is not dumped...you need to replace the Ice maker...around $30 to $50depnding on brand and where you buy it...I shop Marcones Appliance parts the appliance repairman's friend...good quality cheap prices.

Good Luck I hope this helped...please rate me ...the Fang.
