GE profile spacemaker micro XL1800

We've had a profile spacemaker XL1800 micro for approx. 2 yrs. No problems...worked well-we loved it. Tonight, as my husband tried to defrost some ground beef, we heard a very odd, almost grinding noise, making the regular microwave noise louder. We shut it off to check to see if something was making the noise inside, and didn't see anything, so he started again. The loud noise started briefly then stopped with this second try. It "appeared" to work-all lights, the clock, the sound, but at the end of the cycle, nothing had happened to the meat. I tried to just do 'express cook' for 1 min. with a cup of water to heat it and nothing happened at end of the minute. Is this a repairable matter or are we going to end up replacing the microwave? And if it is repairable...is this a costly one? Something we can do?

I tried to put the water in...the micro started making that awful noise and it started to sound like something was almost 'sizzling', and there was a slight smell, so I shut it off, and removed the water (which was still completely cold)

I called GE customer service and the woman very quickly said "oh it's the magnetron" and like you said, told me that it should be covered under warranty, but we'll still be responsible for labor charges. They're sending someone out this Monday...my husband's concern is that will the service call cost warrant it or is it worth just getting a new microwave. I looked up how much this microwave costs (we were limited due to the size of the space in our kitchen)-the avg. cost is over $450 for a new one, not including installation, etc....I have to believe that the service call isn't going to be anywhere near this amt! Read similar postings of magnetron replacement and the service costs around $150-$200. Would you agree??

Thank you so much for your time and assistance.

well, they waived the service call fee (which was almost $90!)...my husband hasn't called me up yet to let me know the labor amt. According to GE, the magnetron is covered under warranty, so the only $ would be labor. When I can get hold of him and the final results, I will let you know.

Thank you again for your helpful feedback/info. regarding this.

Well...just s/w husband...magnetron is free b/c under warranty, but they did a write up of labor to be $170! Ouch. They waived the $90 service call, which would have jumped that overall cost up even to a more painful amt., so I guess I should be thankful about that...I guess....what's odd is that when you go on their website to the area that confirms our appt, it says that if a part is covered under warranty the part and labor is free...so this contradicts it all. The service guy told us to go and contact GE again prior to his return in a week (he had to order the part) and s/w someone about this to get some clarification. Apparently, they just make notes in the system for him and they do all the decision making...what?????

It sounds like your magnetron has failed.

I would put a cup or so of water in it and heat it for about 3 minutes.

Then check inside and see if you smell any electrical burning or other smell.

You should have a 5-year warranty on the magnetron.

I would bet the service call will be about $75 and the cost to actually replace the magnetron and test it will be $50-90.

Hopefully it's not more, but please let me know how it goes.

Only "Helpful"? Where did I go wrong?? :)

P.S. The $170 you are being charged sounds a lot like my ballpark of $75 for a service call and $95 for on-site labor. Reminds me of raising a price, then giving a "discount". Then again, maybe you're in a market with higher rates...

HI, IT'S ME OCFAM-the site doesn't let me log in-keeps saying i have invalid password...oh, and fyi-i did give you the highest rank/rating, but again...something isn't kosher with this site when things go through on my end, so it ranked you differently. I don't understand-very annoying....I've reset my password already 4 times and I still can't log back in b/c it's not being recognized. Whatever. Well...the amt. of $170 is the ballpark...ok...we're actually not getting the service call charge...so it's like they're making up for it apparently in this amt. if going by your breakdown, in a sense. So you think you're getting this great deal...and whammo! Amazing...our micro is not even 2 yrs. old and I've got friends and family who've had theirs for over 5 and no problems...sigh...
thanks again-at least I know what is going on is legit. appreciate your time with this matter.

I'm betting your base model number is JVM1860, JVM1861, JVM1870, JVM1871, JVM3660, or JVM3670.
That's the automatic louver you're having trouble with. There are micro switches in the louver assembly which tell the controller when the louver is open or closed.
If one of those switches or the louver motor fails, the louver will not work correctly.
Did your cooktop lights recently fail?
Sometimes the surge from them shorting will cause damage to the circuit board, which can be repaired.
There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.
There is a video here showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.
You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

Re: GE Profile Spacemaker XL1800 Loud humming sound when turned on. Please advise

I have the same problem. A repair person said that he thought it was the megatron (whatever that is) He suggested just using the microwave until it quits.

GE Profile turned off as soon as it start

If you can program it and the problem occures when you push START. Then the problem is a door switch, or the control panel not having a completed circuit. Think of your control panel as an off-on switch.COOK, the control panel switches on for 100% of the time programed. DEFROST,The control panel turns the Cook-Relay on for 30% and off for 70%, on, off, on, off,for the time you programmed for DEFROST. This is how it works. There is no lowering of the output. The output is 100% anything other than COOk is done in % of time on, % of time off. This is why you can hear a "Bump" when Defrosting. The "Bump" is the Cook-Relay sending power to the High Voltage Side, 30% on, 70% off.

My ge profile spacemaker xl1800 turntable stopped it turns once in a while. What do I need to replace. Where can I find the part number?

It's probably a bad turntable motor or coupler.
