Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven
We've had a profile spacemaker XL1800 micro for approx. 2 yrs. No problems...worked well-we loved it. Tonight, as my husband tried to defrost some ground beef, we heard a very odd, almost grinding noise, making the regular microwave noise louder. We shut it off to check to see if something was making the noise inside, and didn't see anything, so he started again. The loud noise started briefly then stopped with this second try. It "appeared" to work-all lights, the clock, the sound, but at the end of the cycle, nothing had happened to the meat. I tried to just do 'express cook' for 1 min. with a cup of water to heat it and nothing happened at end of the minute. Is this a repairable matter or are we going to end up replacing the microwave? And if it is repairable...is this a costly one? Something we can do?
It sounds like your magnetron has failed.
I would put a cup or so of water in it and heat it for about 3 minutes.
Then check inside and see if you smell any electrical burning or other smell.
You should have a 5-year warranty on the magnetron.

HI, IT'S ME OCFAM-the site doesn't let me log in-keeps saying i have invalid password...oh, and fyi-i did give you the highest rank/rating, but again...something isn't kosher with this site when things go through on my end, so it ranked you differently. I don't understand-very annoying....I've reset my password already 4 times and I still can't log back in b/c it's not being recognized. Whatever. Well...the amt. of $170 is the ballpark...ok...we're actually not getting the service call charge...so it's like they're making up for it apparently in this amt. if going by your breakdown, in a sense. So you think you're getting this great deal...and whammo! Amazing...our micro is not even 2 yrs. old and I've got friends and family who've had theirs for over 5 and no problems...sigh...
