Question about AcerPower FE PC Desktop

1 Answer

Have a Power FE which I bought in 2006 and am now just getting around to adding extra RAM. I have purchased 2 PNY 1 GB DDR 400 MHZ chips. When I install one of these chips into the left (as seen when upright) memory slot and leave the right one empty the system will boot and after saving the new memory in the BIOS the system runs well and it registers I have 1 GB of RAM in the systems screen. When I put in both chips the computer will initially turn on but then goes nowhere and the screen remains blank. When I try to put just one chip in the right memory bay the computer does the same thing. When I put the 1 GB chip in the left slot and put the 512 MB chip which came with the computer in the right slot I get jibberish on the monitor-multiple colored figures. What do I need to do to be able to have 2 GB of RAM on this computer?

There is a BIOS update to version R02-A4. Please check and see if that is the bios version that you have on that machine. If it is not. You need to go to the Acer website and download and install the BIOS upgrade. Notice you can have a bad outcome from doing this. IT rarely happens BUT it can. If the Bios version that you have is current. Then what video cards do you have? Have you installed ANY hardware?

    Hi! Eyecue

Thanks for your help! Unfortunately I will be away from my desktop until Wednesday evening so I will check the BIOS version then. Perhaps you can explain what adverse events could happen if I did need to download the new version. I am getting at least 1 GB of RAM now and the computer is running a bit faster so it may be better to let well enough alone if I have the old version. I have added some hardware over the years. The two pieces I can recall are adding a new HP DVD disc drive and adding a tape cassette unit so I could transfer my audio cassettes to digital files on the computer. I don't recall adding anything else. I have not replaced the video card and I will have to check tomorrow night exactly what it is. Again thanks for your help and especially getting back to me so soon!!!

Your mainboard supports:

DDR 1, 333 / 266 mhz 184pin 3 x DIMM slots up to 3GB

The mhz is not so important
it can easy run with 400 mhz
if the cpu supports it.

Regarding 250W SMPS

250 watt is low under any circumstances, I'd upgrade atleast to a 450 or higher, around 650watt to be extra safe.

IS DDR SDRAM IS DDR II RAM OR DDR

No. DDR replaced the SD in RAM so SDRAM and DDR RAM are two completely different things but each ram type has its own frequency hence you get SDRAM 100(mhz) and SDRAM 133(Mhz) just like you get DDR 1 RAM at 266(mhz) and 400(mhz) and DDR 2 RAM at 533(mhz) and 800(mhz). Therefore as you can see how these things differ, but if your mboard takes SDRAM that it can take and frequency of SDRAM but you must ensure that all the frequencies of all your RAM modules in all your slots correspond otherwise you will have problems, meaning that if you decide to use 133mhz RAM then all your RAM modules that you use must be the same. Let me know how you go. thanks
