SOURCE: Power shuts off on my dyson dc17 animal

My DC 17 Animal would only work when the brush was in the down position & the hose attachment wouldn't work at all. There was no suction. We had to take it in to be serviced & discovered that there is another filter in the system that Dyson doesn't tell you about. The person at the service center said he sees this problem a lot with this model because there is nothing about it in Dyson's consumer documentation.

SOURCE: How to replace belt on Dyson DC17

Preface: Dyson folks were great, answer so simple I was embarassed after I called. 5 minute fix.
1. Loosen 3 screws from bottom plate using flathead screwdriver or coin edge and remove it.
2. Wiggle roller until it pulls straight out.
3. Squeeze new belt and loop it over metal drive gear (you'll easily see the gear).
4. Keeping belt on gear, insert edge of roller through belt and rotate the roller while pushing it through belt until it is inside the belt, then continue rotating roller and sliding it over until belt is in position over gears on roller.
5. Insert roller into slots on that it came out of, reattach bottom cover and its done.

SOURCE: dyson dc17 animal stopped sucking. brush still

Make sure the flexible hose that connects the beater brush housing up to the connection up by the dust bin is still connected. It could also have a hole in it so check for that as well.

Hi! My Dyson DC17 starts fine and then, within a second, gets very loud with an extra sucking noise.

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

Like most Dyson vacuums, DC17 includes a suction relief valve. This allows extra airflow into the vacuum to protect the motor if the machine is used when blocked. If you've already washed the pre-motor filter and checked all the ducts for blockages, it's possible there's an issue with your machine's cyclone pack which has caused it to block.

We'd appreciate the opportunity to help you check for this - please do not continue to use your machine in the meantime as this may cause damage. When you have your DC17 easily to hand, please give the Dyson Customer Helpline a call on 1-866-693-9766 (US), or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

We'll look forward to speaking with you.

Hi Jodi, it's Jack at Dyson.

Like most Dyson vacuums, DC17 is engineered to shut itself off for protection if it starts to overheat. If this happens after a period of use, or when you try to use the wand and hose, it's likely this will be caused by a blockage somewhere in the machine.

We'd like to provide further assistance and to help you check for any obstructions within the machine. When you have your vacuum easily to hand, please call us on 1-866-693-9766 (US), or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

We'll look forward to speaking with you.

My carpet nap is very thick and it is very hard to vacuum with my Dyson dc17 animal. I need to know if there is a way to adjust the height on the vacuum

Hi Deb,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty using DC17 on this particular carpet type. DC17 is engineered to adjust automatically to different floor types, and does not need manual height adjustment.

Carpet manufacturers sometimes recommend vacuuming deep or delicate carpet piles with the rotating brush bar turned off. We'd recommend checking with the manufacturer of your carpeting as they'll be best placed to offer advice on the correct way of cleaning it. To turn off the brush bar on DC17, just use the silver brush control switch next to the red on/off switch.

It's also worth checking that the soleplate is fitted correctly. Any dirt or residue on the soleplate can be removed with a damp cloth - make sure it's completely dry before refitting it. You can find out how to remove and replace it here: http://content.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=962&product=DC17-ANIMAL

I hope this helps, but if you would like further advice after you've given this a try, please email your details to askdysonUS@dyson.com. One of our experts will be in touch as soon as possible.

Best wishes,

Jack

We checked everything on the vacuum, except the motor. Is there a way to check? Vacuum just stopped running. Its a Dyson DC17. Thanks!

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. Like most Dyson cleaners, your DC17 is equipped with a safety device which shuts off the cleaner if it starts to overheat. This is often due to a blockage - I'd also recommend washing the filter. The easiest way to check for and remove any blockages is to follow the steps shown in our online guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=954&product=DC17-ANIMAL

The correct way to wash the filter is shown in the video linked below. The filter should be washed in cold water without any detergent, at least once every 3-6 months. Always ensure it's totally dry before replacing it - this may take up to 24 hours.

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=1463&product=DC17-ANIMAL

By clearing any obstructions and washing the filter, you should be able to resolve your issue without further assistance. However, if you've followed these steps and are still concerned, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly. You can call us free on 08002980298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US). One of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you and recommend the best course of action.

Roller bar belt broke on my dc17 animal. how do i

This belt isn't available at your normal retail stores like Walmart or Home Depot. You can try your local vacuum repair shop, but not all vacuum shops carry Dyson parts. The best bet is online. You can get this belt here at this link and shipping is only $1.99. That might be worth it rather than driving all over trying to find that belt.

I have a DC 17. In the middle of vacuuming the vacuum stopped working when it was in the upright position. It only works when the head is down and i am using the bar. I can not use the extension bar,...

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

Like most Dyson vacuums, DC17's main suction motor is protected by a thermostat which shuts the machine down if it starts to overheat. This could be due to a blockage, and the filter may also need a wash. If this occurs, the separate brush bar motor will still run if you recline the vacuum, and shut off when you stand the vacuum upright.

The vacuum should reset itself automatically after it's cooled down for around 2 hours. To prevent this from reoccurring, please wash the filter as shown in our video guide - in normal use this should be done at least once every 3 months. Use cold water without detergent, and allow the filter to dry completely for at least 24 hours before replacing it.

Once you've done this it's important to check the vacuum for any blockages - our Support guide will walk you through each checkpoint to make sure nothing is missed: http://www.dyson.com/support/dc17/dc17-allfloors/diagnosis-root-menu/dc17filterwashvid/flo-dc17-wand-suction

This should resolve the issue. However if the issue reoccurs when the filter is clean and there are no obstructions in the airways, there could be an issue with the cyclone pack itself. If this is the point please contact us directly, as we'd appreciate the opportunity to provide further assistance. You can reach our experts by calling 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).
