Without knowing ur brand of computer i would have to assume that u did a clean install. Go to the manufacturer's website and download the drivers for ur brand of computer. Once u install all of the basic drivers, everything should be as good as new.

Install the driver

You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver. Windows may have the driver built-in. If you are asked for the driver and you do not have it, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendor’s Web site.

In the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver to start the Hardware Update Wizard. Follow the instructions to install the driver.

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver

Procedure
Step 1
Click on "Start."

Step 2
On the "Start" menu, click on "Control Panel."

Step 3
In the "Control Panel" folder, click on "Performance and Maintenance."

Step 4
Click on the "System" folder in the "Performance and Maintenance" folder.

Click on the tab titled "Hardware."

Step 6
Click on the box that says "Device Manager."

Step 7
Click on "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers."

Step 8
Right-click on the device that prompts Windows XP to display Code 28 (it should be Windows Sound System Compatible Driver, also called the WDM driver). A drop-down menu will appear.

Step 9
Click on "Update" and an Update Wizard will guide you through the installation of a new device driver, which should stop Code 28 from appearing on Windows XP.

Multimedia controller problem

Error code 28 indicates that the driver for multimedia controller is not installed or corrupted. Use the driver cd provided by your computer manufacturer and install the audio driver.

No sound

Have you tried an external output from your laptop i.e connect headphones . If you can hear something then the drivers are properly installed. If not then more likely the drivers have been overwritten by SP2 and u need to install original drivers from laptops website. Check under Control Panel - sounds and audio then see what device is under your sounds playback.

Firewall settings

This usually happens due to missing or corrupt SharedAccess reg key, which represents the Windows Firewall Service.
Resolution

Download sharedaccess.reg (for Windows XP SP2 only) and save to Desktop. Then double-click the file to merge the contents to the registry. The Services entry will be created. Restart Windows (mandatory step, otherwise the following NETSH command will display an error message).

After restarting Windows, run the following from Command Prompt (cmd.exe)

NETSH FIREWALL RESET

Launch firewall applet from Control Panel, and then configure your Windows Firewall settings.

If nothing helps, as a last-resort solution (before reinstalling Windows XP Service Pack 2), give these two commands a try. Click Start, Run and type:

rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf

Restart Windows, and then run this command (from Command Prompt):

NETSH FIREWALL RESET

Attempt to start Firewall applet. Start the Windows Firewall service if prompted.
